Bird watching becomes one of the largest spectator sport in America New Ohio bird watching resource guide published By CATHY J. SCHREIMA The Evening Leader Bird watching has become the largest spectator sport in America. Ohio has an abundance of birds In different habitats, making it an ideal place for casual and seasoned bird watchers alike. Whether you watch birds by the lake or in your own back yard, a new resource guide has recently been published which will delight any Ohio bird watcher. 'Birds of Ohio Field Guide" (Adveriture Publications) contains 113 species of birds from around Ohio. Stan Teklela, the book's author, is a naturalist and award-winning author, columnist and radio personality. I was surprised and delighted by the simplicity of the detailed pages in this book. Measuring 6 by 4 1 /4 inches, it's small enough to put in a knap sack or Jacket pocket The book is organized by color, so the user doesn't even have to know the name of the bird to find it in the book. If you see a yellow bird, go to the yellow section. A contrast/compare feature helps the user distinguish between two birds, which are similar in appearance. Each page also includes other interesting information such as nest types, the number and color of eggs, color of the female and babies. Naturalist information and other facts of interest are also included. In his author's introduction, Tekiela shares basic information about birds, such as their color, varieties, nestings, migration and fledging. He also offers tips for watching and strategies for identifying birds. Tekiela also provides his readers with range maps showing where in Ohio you'll find the birds and in what season. Full page photos correspond with full-page descriptions. The back of the book contains a helpful resource list and includes a number of Web pages with addresses for many state bird watching societies. This book would make a great gift and is a must for any Ohio bird lover. Its a great learning tool, which. can be used in classrooms, with scout groups and at Summer camp. Tekiela appears on "Destination Outdoors," a syndicated radio show. He is also the author of "Nature Smart: A Family Guide to Nature." "Start Mushrooming: The Easiest Way to Collect Edible Mushrooms" and "Plantworks: 15 Common Edible Plants." The Birds of Ohio Field Guide' is available at bookstores or directly from Adventure Publications for $12.95. plus $2.00 shipping and handling. Credit cards are accepted. I love this guide book! It uses real photograph instead of artist's drawings which is a great help. I love the way the book is set up as well. The birds are divided by colors. When you see a bird, all you need to do is note the main color and flip to that section of the book to start looking for it. It is divided into ten sections, black ,black and white, blue, brown, gray, orange, red, white and yellow. There is also information and tips in the introduction regarding bird watching strategy, migration, nests and range guide. This guide contains 111 common Ohio birds. More than perfect for the bird watching hobbiest! The book is also small enough to tuck into your coat pocket, purse or daypack! Did I already say I love this book?
I bought this field guide as a present, and when it arrived, I was extremely pleased with it. It is easy to navigate and a quick aid in identifying birds, since many are most easily identified by color. It is the right size for a field guide, small enough to store without taking up much space but big enough to handle easily. I am impressed immensely by this guide because of its layout, with the left page being a color picture of the male bird (female and/or juvenile in smaller box on that page)and on the opposing page a description. A lot of field guides have hand drawn pictures, which are utterly unhelpful in identification, but this guide is terrific, which makes sense because it is by a wildlife photographer who understands the importance of detail. The fact page opposite the picture is wonderful too, not overloading the reader with information. It tells you basic information, such as nesting behavior and sounds. It does a great job of being concise while stilling being completely informative. There's also a picture of Ohio that is color coated that signifies when the bird is in Ohio (i.e. migration, summer....). It is a wonderful book that I can't say enough good things about.
I enjoy watching the birds and other animals in my backyard. This is a fun way to look up and track which ones I have seen at my feeder and when. It's sorted by color, along with an alphabetical index in back, to make it easy to locate what you have seen!
I have birdfeeders outside my window by our kitchen table and I have this book on the table, it's really easy to use and fun to identify and learn about the birds that come to the feeders. It was helpful to learn what the birds like to eat and add that to our feeders this year to attract new and different types of birds.
great informative little book. the book is easy to read. the pictures are great. birds are organized by their color. wonderful book for identifying the birds we see in Ohio. very portable, but I can read the print without my reading glasses. great price !
I ordered this book for my son and family who relocated to Ohio. I have this same book at home and use it constantly to identify and read facts about the birds that come to my feeders. I use post-it bookmarkers on the pages so I can refer back to the bird. And it bookmarks how many birds come to my yard throughout the seasons.
This is a nice collection of beautiful birds that I see outside my kitchen window.. So far I've been able to identify each from this book. The addition of interesting facts is a great idea too.I would have given it 5 stars, and probably should have, however the the book would be so nicer, in my opinon, if it was a larger size book and had a tad more description that really brings the pictures to life..I'm glad I purchased it and do recommend it to anyone.I might add that there is a plus side to the smaller size...much easier to carry on walks ... so I guess I would buy both.. :)
Nice and easy to use. Bought as a gift for someone who just moved to Ohio from California. People from other states notice our beautiful birds, and would like to know what they are. This should help.
