Arguably the most indispensible wine book published in recent years. It charts all the major wine regions of the world and offers a nonprofessional’s account of the way that soil, climate and grapes interact. I like the style of many of the maps, some leave a little to be desired as far as readibility is concerned. Anyone who likes wine and wants to know more about what they are drinking will enjoy this book.
The World Atlas of Wine....This book answers everything you have ever wondered about wine! The maps are all extremely detailed and it adds an extra dimension to the book making it so much more interesting.I never expected a book to have this many geological details and I'm also impressed that the authors are really great experts in wine, winery, and wine culture. Great piece which deserves to be owned by every wine lover out there..
I already had one of these World Atlas of Wines Books. My friend loved it so I purchased it for a Christmas gift. He absolutely loved it.Although there are several editions to this book, I liked this one for it's affordability and appearance.Side note. Watch different sellers for the best pricing on this book. I purchased mine for approximately $16 on Prime last fall. Then saw it priced at $49.95 from another seller so I waited and shopped around until I came across this one for my gift giving. I believe I paid under $24. I'm extremely pleased with this purchaseChock full of information from different regions and the Wines produced. A must have for that wine enthusiast who has everything.
The best single general book for a wine library. It still has a bias towards French wine and not enough about New World wines.
Extremely authoritative wine atlas. It covers the history of wine, descriptions of vines and grape varieties, and wine production methods. Also, almost all of the wine growing regions throughout the world are covered in detail, with detailed maps showing important wineries in each region. This is the perfect gift for a person who enjoys learning about the world of wine
Ever wonder where that wine you are currently drinking or serving is from? If you like trying new wines, make sure you have this book with you. It is fascinating to look up the exact winery's location, possibly even read some text about it, while enjoying the terrior directly in the glass. This book is for the novice and the expert, and will give key information to make you one.The details about the many growing regions of the world are fantastic. This book will help you select wines from a region, not just by varietal or by country, but even by vineyard or block. The maps show incredible detail. Every wine lover should have this book. There is only one negative, and that is a book cannot contain every location and winery. So sometimes it won't be there. But overall, this book has to contain 99% of all wine regions, and certainly all the well known ones. You are likely to discover a winery in your backyard, even if you are not in one of the famous wine regions!
This book was a gift for somebody that truly loves wine. Every time I see him he reminds me of how great the book is and how interesting it is to read. The illustrations and maps are beautiful, so just opening the book at a random page and reading provides a very pleasant experience. This hardcover book is great to have in your personal library, or on top of the coffee table if you enjoy wine. Or if you would like to give it as a gift to someone that loves wine, you will not be disappointed!
This is a wonderful work, but I agree with another reviewer that the tiny fonts, especially in the index, greatly reduce its usefulness. I am getting old, and for me also the book is too large and heavy. I saw the second edition and that was what I wanted, but I bought a 4th edition, and am just glad I did not get the 5th. Apparently every new edition is an attempt to cram more data into smaller space. The first edition of a book is always the best. I do not blame Mr. Johnson as I love all his writings. It is the publisher's fault, wanting to sell more books by constantly revising them. It would be more useful for me just to have a second volume devoted to areas skipped over in the first one. But if you are young and strong and have incredibly good eyesight, this is not a problem for you, as the content of the book is wonderful.
This book is amazing. It has detailed maps of virtually every wine-growing region in the world. The maps show not only the typical geographical information of the region, but even shows the location of important vineyards and wineries in the region. It is really cool to be able to open a bottle of wine and then to see exactly where it was made! The text that accompanies each map talks about the geography and terroir and it gives and overview of the wines of that region. Highly recommended.
