About the Author

Rachel Carson (1907–1964) spent most of her professional life as a marine biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. By the late 1950s, she had written three lyrical, popular books about the sea, including the best-selling The Sea Around Us, and had become the most respected science writer in America. She completed Silent Spring against formidable personal odds, and with it shaped a powerful social movement that has altered the course of history.

"The Edge of the Sea" is a fitting conclusion to Rachel Carson's so-called "Sea Trilogy" that started in 1941 with "Under the Sea Wind" and followed in 1951 with her famous "The Sea Around Us". In this, her final installment, Carson again delves in the Nature of Life at the boundaries of sea and land. As in all her writings, Carson raises the bar for quality nature writing for all future authors. Poetically written for the layman reader this book still serves as a good introduction to Marine Biology. Although much has changed in this branch of science since 1955 it shouldn't make any difference to the the general reader, like myself. Like all scientist's, Carson was well aware that new observations and theories might someday override her conclusions, but in 1955 this book was at the cutting edge of marine biology. Nowadays interested readers just need to keep in mind when the book was written and let that serve as a jumping off place for more up to date publications. The book starts with the ecology of shore life and with the ever changing geology and changes in continental shape and position. Carson does not mention Plate Tectonics or Continental Drift, per say, but does address changing sea levels and the erosional changes to coast lines, world wide. And, as always, she talks about the human impact on the shoreline, pollution and quality of the ocean water itself. Warnings that ring as true today as they did in the mid 20th Century. Ocean life is not only the biology of individual species but more so how different plants and animals intact with one another. No organism lives in isolation but is an active member of a community of living things that live and die according to their very nature. As Carson talks about many of the shores organisms she reminds the readers that some of her conclusions are mere speculation and that much remains to be discovered by future scientists. Her speculations, however, are based on years of intense observations and her own intimate knowledge of sea life. I really enjoyed reading this classic nature book, it offered many incites on our oceans's myriad livings things, their life histories and evolution. It also offered a look on where the oceans have come from and where they may be going in years to come. The original edition had many fine line-drawings by wildlife artist Robert W. Hines that are included in the Kindle edition. Also included in this e-reader edition is a new introduction by modern nature writer Sue Hubbell. I had no technical or downloading problems with this Kindle edition.Last Ranger

Being a beach person, I enjoyed this book on the different types of shores. My favorite, though, was on the sandy beaches of the southeast. Parts may be a bit dated, but it was worth reading.

Rachel Carson methodically takes you on a journey from the edges of the ocean to the near off shore. Her insights are thoughtful. Her writing at times poetic could at times become tedious.

Excellent read...you look at things differently after reading this book...enriches one's way of looking at things...😊

So important. Ignore at your peril.

So very interesting and enlightening. She was a dedicated, smart and caring woman.

Briliant, poetic -- Rachel Carson is unbeatable.

I read the book for the first time many years ago and have recently purchased it again for my Kindle. It has so much in it for anyone who loves the sea and is also curious about the creatures in it. Carson is a gifted writer and the illustrations help make it a real educational experience. Even though it is easy to read, it is not to be read through quickly because there is way too much to be learned.

I am disappointed in this book. I wanted it because I have a few antique wheels that I am attempting to identify and, after hours of sifting through the www, I thought that this book would provide me with the answers for which I had been searching. Not so. Sadly, I feel even more frustrated and have already begun searching online (again). While it is true that it would be impossible for any one book (or collection) to contain every single type and make of spinning wheel ever made, it seems like this book is a bit narrow in its selections. Perhaps, as one reviewer wrote, an updated version may solve this issue. The book provides a topical introduction to spinning wheel anatomy and a detailed description of the main types of wheels encountered in the U.S.; however it reads like a history text for collectors rather than a "living" history book for living spinners. Perhaps the fact that I am more of a spinner than a collector has clouded my perception? On the positive side, it does have plenty of pictures and it is clear that an enormous amount of research went into it. It is probably very helpful to many people; just not to me. It will sit on a shelf somewhere collecting dust until it is either given or packed away.

After purchasing a rather unique antique small spinning wheel just for home decor we wanted to learn more about it. This is the standard of reference books on antique spinning wheels and helped us to understand the history and types in identifying our wheel.

A useful book, it just needs updating. A lot of other wheels have surfaced since then, and there should be a section on how to identify "modern" wheels because I've seen a lot of dealers try to fob off modern Ashfords as genuine "antiques" either out of ignorance or greed.

i was delighted to learn of this book and to get it. i have a shaker great wheel and had long wishedfor any kind of information. book arrived very fast and much appreciated here.

For anyone interested in spinning wheels, this is a great overview of the provenance, styles & development of spinning wheels in North America.A very nice pictorial reference.Mr. Pennington's later (2004) book is on my Christmas list!

A good reference for when you are "picking" for spinning wheels.

Nice book!

Book was rec'd and as described. Thank you for the fast service.

Arguably the most indispensible wine book published in recent years. It charts all the major wine regions of the world and offers a nonprofessional’s account of the way that soil, climate and grapes interact. I like the style of many of the maps, some leave a little to be desired as far as readibility is concerned. Anyone who likes wine and wants to know more about what they are drinking will enjoy this book.

The World Atlas of Wine....This book answers everything you have ever wondered about wine! The maps are all extremely detailed and it adds an extra dimension to the book making it so much more interesting.I never expected a book to have this many geological details and I'm also impressed that the authors are really great experts in wine, winery, and wine culture. Great piece which deserves to be owned by every wine lover out there..

I already had one of these World Atlas of Wines Books. My friend loved it so I purchased it for a Christmas gift. He absolutely loved it.Although there are several editions to this book, I liked this one for it's affordability and appearance.Side note. Watch different sellers for the best pricing on this book. I purchased mine for approximately $16 on Prime last fall. Then saw it priced at $49.95 from another seller so I waited and shopped around until I came across this one for my gift giving. I believe I paid under $24. I'm extremely pleased with this purchaseChock full of information from different regions and the Wines produced. A must have for that wine enthusiast who has everything.

The best single general book for a wine library. It still has a bias towards French wine and not enough about New World wines.

Extremely authoritative wine atlas. It covers the history of wine, descriptions of vines and grape varieties, and wine production methods. Also, almost all of the wine growing regions throughout the world are covered in detail, with detailed maps showing important wineries in each region. This is the perfect gift for a person who enjoys learning about the world of wine

Ever wonder where that wine you are currently drinking or serving is from? If you like trying new wines, make sure you have this book with you. It is fascinating to look up the exact winery's location, possibly even read some text about it, while enjoying the terrior directly in the glass. This book is for the novice and the expert, and will give key information to make you one.The details about the many growing regions of the world are fantastic. This book will help you select wines from a region, not just by varietal or by country, but even by vineyard or block. The maps show incredible detail. Every wine lover should have this book. There is only one negative, and that is a book cannot contain every location and winery. So sometimes it won't be there. But overall, this book has to contain 99% of all wine regions, and certainly all the well known ones. You are likely to discover a winery in your backyard, even if you are not in one of the famous wine regions!

This book was a gift for somebody that truly loves wine. Every time I see him he reminds me of how great the book is and how interesting it is to read. The illustrations and maps are beautiful, so just opening the book at a random page and reading provides a very pleasant experience. This hardcover book is great to have in your personal library, or on top of the coffee table if you enjoy wine. Or if you would like to give it as a gift to someone that loves wine, you will not be disappointed!

This is a wonderful work, but I agree with another reviewer that the tiny fonts, especially in the index, greatly reduce its usefulness. I am getting old, and for me also the book is too large and heavy. I saw the second edition and that was what I wanted, but I bought a 4th edition, and am just glad I did not get the 5th. Apparently every new edition is an attempt to cram more data into smaller space. The first edition of a book is always the best. I do not blame Mr. Johnson as I love all his writings. It is the publisher's fault, wanting to sell more books by constantly revising them. It would be more useful for me just to have a second volume devoted to areas skipped over in the first one. But if you are young and strong and have incredibly good eyesight, this is not a problem for you, as the content of the book is wonderful.

This book is amazing. It has detailed maps of virtually every wine-growing region in the world. The maps show not only the typical geographical information of the region, but even shows the location of important vineyards and wineries in the region. It is really cool to be able to open a bottle of wine and then to see exactly where it was made! The text that accompanies each map talks about the geography and terroir and it gives and overview of the wines of that region. Highly recommended.
