Review
"Generous, unique, and comprehensive - this book will help every farmer to better set goals, reach those goals, and improve their bottom line!"--Ela Chapin, Program Director, Vermont Farm Viability Enhancement Program "What a breath of fresh air! Richard Wiswall challenges the conventional notion that there's no real money in farming. He argues that farmers should be well-compensated, and then he shows how to make that happen. Every farmer--organic or not, beginner or experienced--should read this book."--Lynn Byczynski, editor and publisher of Growing for Market, a journal of news and ideas for local food producers "Many people become organic farmers because they love growing crops and working the land, but truth be told that's often the easy part. Richard Wiswall's book provides practical, real-world guidance for dealing with the hard part: the business of farming."--Vern Grubinger, Vegetable and Berry Specialist, University of Vermont Extension "Here is a call to 'wake up and smell the pencil shavings!'--that a sharp pencil (and the ability to use it) is an essential tool for every farmer's toolbox. Farmers old and new will find great practical benefit from Wiswall's book."--Andrew Brait, Full Belly Farm, Guinda, CA"How could anyone hope to produce a business guidebook useful to one of the most diverse, independent, even contrary groups of people on earth? This essential book is overdue! While the principles have been around for some time, this is the first they have been assimilated and tested so successfully."--Ed Martsolf, Petit Jean Farm, Morrilton, Arkansas "Richard Wiswall has given us a finely tuned handbook to run a profitable organic farm. Most farmers love the growing part but dread the business end, and suffer financially for it. This is a book that I will recommend to ANY farmer regardless of how long he or she has been in business. There are a lot of hard-learned lessons contained within that will help avoid reinventing the wheel, as so many of us have."--Mark Wheeler, Pacific Botanicals LLC, Grants Pass, OR

I bought this book at a pretty high price looking for some advice about profitability unique to organic farming. Unfortunately the title is misleading in that regard. The book is about the business aspect of farming in general and the author throws in the word organic now and then. For example, I would like to know about the costs specific to purchasing OMRI approved products for pest and disease control, none of which were mentioned. The author goes a little far afield in writing of accounting methods, investing and estate planning. Useful to know but there are plenty of really good books on those subjects. The book has some useful pearls but nothing unique. It's well written and a good read but it's not the best resource for somebody looking to start an organic farm. And the Amazon price is much higher than that for comparable books, especially when you buy the kindle version and don't get the companion CD.
Here you have the nuts and bolts no one tells you about. From figuring out your vision and what you want out of life to balancing your profit and loss this book covers it all. It is also very readable. Many books that address the practical aspects of life put you to sleep before you can glean much information from them, but not this one.
Clear, concise. Touches on subjects most other farming/market gardening books do not, which is serious finances and farming for profit. Breaks the paradigm that farmers don't make any money. Covers administrative work, labor, production efficiencies, defining goals, and overall execution. A must have.
For the beginning/want-to-be farmer this book is priceless!!! It answered many of our questions regarding what it means to be a farmer and helped us to develop the 'farm as a business' perspective, especially with respect to taxes, keeping track of farm income/expenses, plugging leaks, etc. The author presented a very simple and excellent method for keeping up with these necessary details. The example worksheets for budgeting/tracking the productivity of various farming ventures, discussions regarding the separation of personal and farm expenses/accounts, marketing strategies, etc. help to further effectively illustrate the author's points. Discussions regarding increasing the farm's assets versus investing outside the farm were useful for pointing out the importance of planning for retirement and recognizing that expenses are not investments, but simply expenses. We also appreciated the discussions regarding increasing efficiency (blocking tasks, making a calendar, scheduling time for important tasks, etc.), employee management (weekly meetings, multiple employees on big tasks, breaking up large tasks into smaller ones, rotating/mixing up hard and fun tasks in the same day, etc.), and business plan development (staying focused, keeping your goals in mind, dropping non-profitable activities, etc.). In short, the book is easy to read and flows nicely from one topic to the next. It is clearly written from a hands-on management perspective making it very practical and useful.
This is definitely the star of the genre so far. Most of the information won't be new to you if you're well into running a farm business, but Wiswall does a superb job of presenting it all in a cohesive, useful format. Some of his systems are a little old-fashioned (I'd guess many younger farmers are doing more of their recordkeeping electronically) but I've yet to see a book comparable.
I think this is a really good place to start for anyone wishing to enter the "business" of farming. There is a lot of basic information in here, and I'm not terribly concerned about some inaccuracies mentioned in one of the reviews, because those issues (for me at least) is why I use a CPA. The book helps to get and stay financially organized; perhaps best appreciated by your accountant. Aside from the financial issues, it helps to organize and manage the farm environment, and that can be a real aid to both the wallet and the back. A good buy.
For the beginning farmer, this book is an excellent resource. It's chock full of practical suggestions (based on the farmer's years of experience) and examples for keeping records on the farming enterprise. At this point I'm about half-way through the book and have not yet accessed the CD which is included, but I expect the remainder of the book and CD will be just as useful as the first half. Sometimes I feel "organizationally challenged" but with this book I do not have to "reinvent the wheel" and can make better decisions about my farm because I will know precisely where I stand with the finances. This book not only addresses finances, but also time-management issues which are just as important as the dollars and cents. The happiness factor is greatly enhanced when your life is in balance and you feel like you are reaching your goals. This book also addresses dealing with staff which is a huge topic in itself.Thank you, Richard Wiswall, for writing this book and saving me several hundred hours of my life trying to figure out how to balance the books and keep my sanity. You are as much of a hero to me as Joel Salatin is for his insignts and leadership in organic farming.
Not even finished and already feel the money was well spent. I would like to shake the writers hand.
