Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, by Tom Shales James Andrew Miller

From Publishers Weekly

This oral history of NBC's Saturday Night Live is the juiciest treasure trove of backstage gossip, sex and drugs since The Andy Warhol Diaries. With almost three decades' worth of memories from cast members, celebrity hosts, writers, crew and network execs, readers get first-hand reports (often contradictory) on the volatile, competitive, grueling and often drug-fueled process of creating a weekly, 90-minute, live comedy show. While the cast and writers changed over the decades there were two constants: the universal loathing of guest host Chevy Chase and the power of producer Lorne Michaels ("I think he picked the right profession," assesses Jane Curtin, "because he gets to lord over people who want to kneel at his feet and he doesn't acknowledge them-which makes them work harder."). Regulars like Dan Aykroyd, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Mike Myers, Billy Crystal, Bill Murray, Al Franken, Martin Short as well as guest hosts like Tom Hanks, Penny Marshall, Alec Baldwin, Carrie Fisher, Lily Tomlin and Steve Martin contribute sterling anecdotes that are alternately hilarious, touching, upbeat and scathing. With the exception of Eddie Murphy (who's positively portrayed), virtually the only missing voices are of those who have passed away (the editors use only interviews conducted for the book and not vintage interviews with John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Phil Hartman or Chris Farley). Scandals, infighting and plenty of showbiz dirt make this a guilty-pleasure page-turner from start to finish. Photos not seen by PW.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I enjoyed the first parts of the book where they were interviewing people from the show when it started and into the late '80s and early '90s. There's a wealth of interesting information there for fans of the show. Everyone being interviewed in that section is so far from their SNL days that they can dish with reckless abandon and you get some very candid interviews.Where the book falls apart, unfortunately, is when you start getting into the early 2000s. At that point it's obvious the authors are interviewing people who were still on the show at the time they were writing. Gone are the candid anecdotes to be replaced by stars talking about how great it is to be on the show and how they're fulfilling a lifelong dream.I can understand why this happened. You don't want to bite the hand that feeds you. The problem is that it really derails what was otherwise a very interesting book for the first half as people switch from dishing stories from their crazy younger days to current stars obviously avoiding rocking the boat.

Pleasant read, being reminded of some of the forgotten "players" and hazy years was nice. The idea of having so many different people's perspective gave a really good picture of just how difficult this has been to pull off for so many years. Spared no one's feelings when they were mentioned but also gave praise for the hard work most put in. Having a lot of different people's opinion about the same thing or the same person was really an interesting read. The writers had some of the toughest comments but they have the hardest job and it all fit together very nicely. The common theme of the players seeking Lorne's favor or just any crumb of attention he could toss them was just about pitiful at times and he is apparently one stingy guy with compliments, then the ones who claimed an easy "we were really close" relationship with him were almost as pitiful, the way they spoke made you think it was just what they were hoping was true. Found out new things about the players I thought I had probably read everything about, turns out there were still things to be told.

Live from New York, a behind-the-scenes history of the Saturday Night Live television series by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales, was originally published in 2002. The latest edition, released in 2014, was timed to coincide with the show’s 40th anniversary and has been updated with coverage through the program’s 39th season. The book is an oral history comprised of brief bits of first-person commentary by hundreds of SNL cast members, crew, writers, hosts, and NBC network executives. The oral history approach evokes the collaborative nature of SNL and allows for the presentation of differing perspectives on events or controversies in the show’s history. The drawback to this approach, unfortunately, is that it all too often amounts to dozens of people making the exact same points over and over again.Miller and Shales are attempting to accomplish two goals here: the first is to give the reader an idea of what it’s like to work at SNL; the second is to establish the show’s place in television history. Towards the latter goal, it’s not surprising that much space is devoted to the formation of the show and the original cast of Not Ready for Prime Time Players. For the television historian, the endless debates over the details of the show’s creation may be important, but for the casual fan the network politics can get rather dull. I understand that Lorne Michaels is the heart and soul of SNL, and likely a comedy genius, but does anyone really watch the show for Lorne? Most likely you watch the show for its cast members, and what this book doesn’t do well is let the cast members’ voices be heard, unless they’re talking about Lorne. Writers are an important part of the show also, and it’s interesting to hear them talk about how certain sketches were created. Unfortunately, too many of the writers just discuss the same things over and over again—how hard it is to get stuff on the show, staying up all Tuesday night writing, and once again, Lorne. Even though everyone analyzes Lorne ad nauseam throughout the entire book, when you reach the end you get a final chapter entitled “Lorne” which is an absurd exercise in eulogizing the living. If you’re interested in romances or feuds between cast members, there’s little of that mentioned beyond what’s already common knowledge. Another problem with the oral history approach is that almost everyone is reluctant to say anything bad about anyone. There’s a few cast members that everyone seems to agree were difficult, and when the topic of worst host ever comes up, the usual easy targets are mentioned. Surprises are few. Some great cast members either declined to participate (Eddie Murphy) or are barely present (Will Ferrell, Mike Myers). The best part of the book is the Kevin Nealon/Jan Hooks/Phil Hartman years through the Sandler/Farley/Spade/Rock era, because that’s when you get the most cast input and the best idea of how much fun it is to put the show together. Surprisingly, an inordinate amount of time is devoted to the very recent years of the show, with a lot of unnecessary congratulatory back-slapping. From the way praise is heaped on Andy Samberg’s juvenile music videos, you’d think he were the next Fellini.Fifty years from now, television historians are going to consider this book a valuable documentary record of the history of SNL. For the fan, however, it can be a colossal bore. It’s so easy, even addictive, to just read the next little tidbit, but at the end of twenty minutes you realize you’ve just heard forty people say the same thing, and you wonder why you wasted your time. If you can find this book cheap, get it, but just look up the passages concerning your favorite cast members. To read the whole thing is a disappointing and mind-numbing experience.

Review

"Generous, unique, and comprehensive - this book will help every farmer to better set goals, reach those goals, and improve their bottom line!"--Ela Chapin, Program Director, Vermont Farm Viability Enhancement Program "What a breath of fresh air! Richard Wiswall challenges the conventional notion that there's no real money in farming. He argues that farmers should be well-compensated, and then he shows how to make that happen. Every farmer--organic or not, beginner or experienced--should read this book."--Lynn Byczynski, editor and publisher of Growing for Market, a journal of news and ideas for local food producers "Many people become organic farmers because they love growing crops and working the land, but truth be told that's often the easy part. Richard Wiswall's book provides practical, real-world guidance for dealing with the hard part: the business of farming."--Vern Grubinger, Vegetable and Berry Specialist, University of Vermont Extension "Here is a call to 'wake up and smell the pencil shavings!'--that a sharp pencil (and the ability to use it) is an essential tool for every farmer's toolbox. Farmers old and new will find great practical benefit from Wiswall's book."--Andrew Brait, Full Belly Farm, Guinda, CA"How could anyone hope to produce a business guidebook useful to one of the most diverse, independent, even contrary groups of people on earth? This essential book is overdue! While the principles have been around for some time, this is the first they have been assimilated and tested so successfully."--Ed Martsolf, Petit Jean Farm, Morrilton, Arkansas "Richard Wiswall has given us a finely tuned handbook to run a profitable organic farm. Most farmers love the growing part but dread the business end, and suffer financially for it. This is a book that I will recommend to ANY farmer regardless of how long he or she has been in business. There are a lot of hard-learned lessons contained within that will help avoid reinventing the wheel, as so many of us have."--Mark Wheeler, Pacific Botanicals LLC, Grants Pass, OR

I bought this book at a pretty high price looking for some advice about profitability unique to organic farming. Unfortunately the title is misleading in that regard. The book is about the business aspect of farming in general and the author throws in the word organic now and then. For example, I would like to know about the costs specific to purchasing OMRI approved products for pest and disease control, none of which were mentioned. The author goes a little far afield in writing of accounting methods, investing and estate planning. Useful to know but there are plenty of really good books on those subjects. The book has some useful pearls but nothing unique. It's well written and a good read but it's not the best resource for somebody looking to start an organic farm. And the Amazon price is much higher than that for comparable books, especially when you buy the kindle version and don't get the companion CD.

Here you have the nuts and bolts no one tells you about. From figuring out your vision and what you want out of life to balancing your profit and loss this book covers it all. It is also very readable. Many books that address the practical aspects of life put you to sleep before you can glean much information from them, but not this one.

Clear, concise. Touches on subjects most other farming/market gardening books do not, which is serious finances and farming for profit. Breaks the paradigm that farmers don't make any money. Covers administrative work, labor, production efficiencies, defining goals, and overall execution. A must have.

For the beginning/want-to-be farmer this book is priceless!!! It answered many of our questions regarding what it means to be a farmer and helped us to develop the 'farm as a business' perspective, especially with respect to taxes, keeping track of farm income/expenses, plugging leaks, etc. The author presented a very simple and excellent method for keeping up with these necessary details. The example worksheets for budgeting/tracking the productivity of various farming ventures, discussions regarding the separation of personal and farm expenses/accounts, marketing strategies, etc. help to further effectively illustrate the author's points. Discussions regarding increasing the farm's assets versus investing outside the farm were useful for pointing out the importance of planning for retirement and recognizing that expenses are not investments, but simply expenses. We also appreciated the discussions regarding increasing efficiency (blocking tasks, making a calendar, scheduling time for important tasks, etc.), employee management (weekly meetings, multiple employees on big tasks, breaking up large tasks into smaller ones, rotating/mixing up hard and fun tasks in the same day, etc.), and business plan development (staying focused, keeping your goals in mind, dropping non-profitable activities, etc.). In short, the book is easy to read and flows nicely from one topic to the next. It is clearly written from a hands-on management perspective making it very practical and useful.

This is definitely the star of the genre so far. Most of the information won't be new to you if you're well into running a farm business, but Wiswall does a superb job of presenting it all in a cohesive, useful format. Some of his systems are a little old-fashioned (I'd guess many younger farmers are doing more of their recordkeeping electronically) but I've yet to see a book comparable.

I think this is a really good place to start for anyone wishing to enter the "business" of farming. There is a lot of basic information in here, and I'm not terribly concerned about some inaccuracies mentioned in one of the reviews, because those issues (for me at least) is why I use a CPA. The book helps to get and stay financially organized; perhaps best appreciated by your accountant. Aside from the financial issues, it helps to organize and manage the farm environment, and that can be a real aid to both the wallet and the back. A good buy.

For the beginning farmer, this book is an excellent resource. It's chock full of practical suggestions (based on the farmer's years of experience) and examples for keeping records on the farming enterprise. At this point I'm about half-way through the book and have not yet accessed the CD which is included, but I expect the remainder of the book and CD will be just as useful as the first half. Sometimes I feel "organizationally challenged" but with this book I do not have to "reinvent the wheel" and can make better decisions about my farm because I will know precisely where I stand with the finances. This book not only addresses finances, but also time-management issues which are just as important as the dollars and cents. The happiness factor is greatly enhanced when your life is in balance and you feel like you are reaching your goals. This book also addresses dealing with staff which is a huge topic in itself.Thank you, Richard Wiswall, for writing this book and saving me several hundred hours of my life trying to figure out how to balance the books and keep my sanity. You are as much of a hero to me as Joel Salatin is for his insignts and leadership in organic farming.

Not even finished and already feel the money was well spent. I would like to shake the writers hand.

This is the first book in an epic fantasy series. I read all of them back to back after seeing an add on facebook. This book starts off a little shaky, but the story and characters gain strength as the book progresses. I love how the Irish mythology is woven into the plot. Finn, the main character, took a little bit to grow on me, but ultimately I'm rooting for her and her allies. Iseult, a tortured warrior-type, is probably my favorite character. One common complaint I see among reviews is that "nothing" is "resolved" in this book. I agree, but I don't see that as a bad thing. Stories take on lives of their own; they grow and change during the writing of them. When you have a book in the "epic fantasy" genre, that story branching out into a series is kind of a given. It's not a cash grab - believe me, the real money is NOT in writing fantasy novels! To tell a story the way it should be told, an author often has to break that story into multiple books. That is the case here. I actually subscribed to KU just to read this series for free - and it was worth it!So to the critics, I shrug and say, "get over it." If you want a standalone story, don't read a series. If you want everything tied up in a neat little package at the end of the first novel in a series...you're gonna have a hard time. But if you DO want to delve into an awesome, epic fantasy series, READ THIS ONE. Seriously - it's worth it. I would love to visit this world and hang out with these characters. There's tons of myth, magic, party banter, and some great plot twists.

I am deeply puzzled by the enthusiasm shown by the other reviewers for this book. But before I get to my complaints, let me acknowledge its strengths. The novel's opening is nicely done. I found the idea that a tree could become a girl completely charming. That the girl would desperately want to go back to being a tree, despite having some sense that she might have once been something other than a tree, was also intriguing. The author made the early scenes pleasant, and I was eager to keep reading.Fairly soon, however, the troubles began. (Note: what follows is SLIGHTLY spoiler-ish, but I don't reveal names or details.) The main problems for me lie in emotional inertness of the characters. People are described as upset, but they don't act it. If someone is sad, she might cry, but then the sadness simply goes away so that the next event can unfold. And these thin emotions mean that the connections between the characters make no sense. For example, the tree-girl is discovered by an old man, who takes her in and provides her with everything she needs, even though he appears to have almost nothing himself. He even eventually agrees to accompany her on her quest, leaving his entire life behind. This could have - and SHOULD have - been the beginning of a deep relationship. But the author never really gives any of her characters much emotional range, and so none of the characters develop real connections with others. This lack of emotions also makes the characters' motivations pretty incomprehensible. The tree-girl and the old man join up with a group of travelers. One of the travelers is kidnapped. No one liked the kidnapped woman (for good reasons) but they all easily agree to risk their lives to save her. Not much explanation is offered. Later, some members of the group betray others. This comes as a complete surprise, and doesn't fit with anything we learned about the characters earlier. But then the betrayal is reversed, and the betrayers and the betrayed go back to simply being fellow travelers and friends. There is so much inconsistency in people's actions, it makes every event utterly unpredictable.I also found the characterization of the fairies (the Faie) impossible to enjoy. I think we're supposed to find them frightening. But mostly what they were to me was incomprehensible, again, because of the inconsistency in their respective motivations. One member of the Faie is initially reasonable and almost helpful, but then suddenly becomes threatening and then ultimately malevolent. This character shift does not unfold as a normal development of a complicated character, but rather as a random set of attributes that the author simply pulls out, depending on what her plot needs at the moment. I don't need bad guys in black hats, and good guys in white, but I do need to have some sense of where at least some of the people or creatures fit on a scale, at a minimum so I can know whether to be upset when they die! Finally, I really didn't enjoy the overall plot. There are many plot holes, which apparently many people felt made them want to read the next book. I feel that, after reading the entire first volume, since I still didn't know what was happening, or why, I don't need to keep going. YMMV.

Im about 3/4 of the way through and Im surprised to see so few reviews. I really like this writer. I think her idea for this heroine is very unique and her style is great. Sometimes this genre has gratuitous fight scenes that just seem like filler rather than adding to the character development or excitement.... I find the concept of the main character totally believable... Ok, as far as pure fantasy and magical trees turning into girls can feel real. Its descriptive without being repetitive and weird. Also, she does a great job with the dialogue! This is probably my worst pet peeve. I seriously tried a new author out recently and one of the female characters looked at the man who saved her and said "you're my hero" I wanted to barf! None of that nonsense here. I think maybe this is a newer writer and I really think she's going to be one of the greats. I just purchased the last 2 of the series because Im going to want to see this one through. Ill continue to review as I move along.

This is a wonderful book (from a mature reader) that weaves its story and well-written characters into a tapestry along w Irish folklore about the fae. It starts with a terrifically odd premise, almost like a child's tale, and grows, like the branches of a well-edited tree, from there. Must read! (And please, dear author, stop selling this book for .99. It is worth more!)Another reviewer gave this book one star. I have to say ... the reader appears to have misunderstood the book. As many other reviews attest, the characters are engaging, both to the reader and in their interactions w each other. Ms. Roethle has a nice, spare writing style. Relationships and character motivation is seen in the characters' back stories, dialogue, and internal motivations. Emotions are also on full, realistic display. There is solid dialogue and character development. The fae are integral to the story. If the one-star reader didn't understand their importance, then she/he is perhaps reading the wrong genre. I read, and write, YA epic fantasy, so have read a lot of it.And this story is very good. I was particularly impressed by how deftly the multiple perspective was handled, and how it veered away from following the typical action-fantasy-quest trope. Do read!

Excellent resource! This is exactly what I was looking for and is a must-have for any fan of the classic G1 toys. The photography and descriptions are well done, and it's a nice touch that Bellomo notes which weapons and accessories are easily lost. Perfect for anyone wanting to catalog their collection or just for a fan to take a stroll through memory lane. I'd have bough a hardcover version of this had it existed. Something like this covering the post-G1 toys would be equally praised by me.

Great guide and Marc Bellomo always delivers. Already used it bunch of times to get the proper value of a toy that I was trying to find and buy. Definitely recommend this book for anyone who is a transformers collector. Not only does this book give you fair market value of the toys to help you make sure your not going to pay to much for a Generation 1 figure, it gives you pictures of all the accessories and weapons that each figure should have. This can make sure the figure your looking at, has everything included with it and make sure it is complete.

An excellent resource! I own Mr. Bellomo's earlier Transformers Guide, as well as his updated GI Joe guide, and several of his other books. While I have enjoyed Mr. Bellomo's earlier Transformers guide, I felt that the photography could have been stronger. Enter this new edition, and the photography issue has been squarely addressed. The photography in this book really pops and makes a big difference. We get clear and colorful images of the toys, often in nice poses accompanied by accessories. This book chronicles the US G1 Transformers toys by year, starting in 1984. Included are the domestic releases of Transformers, with a brief write up on each toy, photographs of accessories, and multiple photos of each toy. This guide is a useful reference for toy collectors who are looking to re-live their childhood, (re) acquire the toys of their youth, and want to ensure that any G1 Transformers they now obtain are in good condition and complete with all accessories. The book also serves as a fun dose of nostalgia for anyone who grew up in the 1980's, loved Transformers, and would like a trip down memory lane. Highly recommended!

Finally, a second edition of the long out of print first edtion. If you're interested in G1 Transformers, this guide is the be-all-end-all, from vintage toy expert Mark Bellomo. The guide is chronological, with pictures of every Transformer in their robot and alternate form, with history, bios, and other pertinent information for each one. There are also approximate price points for each, but these aren't written in stone, as the author tells us, and are susceptible to market fluctuations. Nice to have though, all the same. If you're interested in collecting this toy line, or even just casually interested in Generation One Transformers, this is a must own book! Supporting this author will also mean other great books like this on other great toy lines! Strongly recommend!

Excellent book. Great guide detailing every generation transformer released from 1984 to 1991, from the original Optimus Prime to the action master/micro master lines. Excellent background info on each piece, provides detailed estimates on what each piece is currently worth based on whether it is loose or misb. Also provides story behind the release of each line and what inspired them to take each direction as the waves were released. All-in-All a must have guide for any transformer collector or fan.

This is a fantastic book! A MUST have for all Transformers collectors, giving you a complete synopsis on each toy, pictures of all accessories, and great descriptions of what to look out for when you are looking to make a new purchase. Also, for those who are just fans of the brand, this is a great piece of nostalgia on remembering all your favorites

As a G1 collector, this book is invaluable. I have his older book and it helped me a lot in buying and selling Transformers toys. I am so glad a new and updated guide came out. I am sure this book will help many others who are looking into buying and collecting Transformers toys as it has helped me in the past. Mark puts out amazing guides. Highly recommended!

This is another exhaustively researched Bellomo classic and a great companion piece to his previous works about Transformers, G.I. Joe, vintage Star Wars, and 1980s toys. Every classic Autobot and Decepticon is thoroughly documented photographically with all accessories and variations. Biographical and relevant collection information is also provided about each bot. The information is presented in chronological order and is grouped by team (Targetmasters, Insecticons, etc.). An index in alphabetical order is also provided and is greatly appreciated. It is evident from the quality of this and his previous works (which you should also own) that Mr. Bellomo puts an enormous amount of time and effort into each tome. Money spent on his work is money well spent.
