I won't say this was bad because I did enjoy it and I was entertained. However, this is far from the original Lord of the Dance and I prefer that one to this one. This one seemed a bit rushed and they all seemed to be trying just a little too hard. Every scene change felt abrupt instead of flowing seamlessly one into the other like the original. A lot of the costumes were over the top, I liked the more subtle look of the original costumes, most of these had too much bling and distracted from the dancing. Also, a lot more skin involved in this one than the original. (Not horribly so, but I always worry when shows feel they have to start showing skin. It usually means they don't think the show is good enough.) The dancers were very good but it didn't seem as tight as the original and the show just felt like it was lacking that special something. I wasn't as pumped up by the end as I was with the original. So again, not bad, but not nearly as good as the original.
I thought that this was the older recording of the live show which I really enjoyed. I even looked at the date to be sure. I ended up paying 1.99 for the same video I just watched for free on Prime last night so in addition to being very disappointed in the bait and switch on versions, let me tell you why I gave this version one star. The original production that used to be available on video was powerful, sweet and felt genuine. This version is a crass, over-budgeted shadow of what it was. Michael F. is slowing down and that is okay. What is NOT okay is that they decided to bombard the audience with cheesy video displays, even more hyped up sexuality (it use to be seductive and sensual, now I feel like I had been propositioned on a street corner) and ego-aggrandizing ploys. If I had wanted an over-blown Vegas show, I would have gone to Vegas. Congrats on all of your sold-out shows BTW that you had to rub our noses in like we should be so grateful that we are allowed to watch it on video. This isn't only bad in it's own right (everyone looks tired and that they are phoning it in) but in comparison to what the original was it is down-right awful.
Its isn't bad (due to the great dancers), but it should be called Lord of Burlesque (yes, I'm being a bit sarcastic). If you grew up on the original stuff, this is going to be a Vegas version of it. None of the story or even half the glitzy costumes makes sense. Gotta love when all the dancers rip their clothes off to dance in bikinis lol. All the more reason for Flatley to run around groping the females and acting over the top. One costume has an image of a hand over the dancer's breast...why?? Definitely not in keeping with the beautiful productions of the earlier Riverdance shows.
A lot of prudish people here. The human body is not sinful, since it was made in the image of our creator, who is holy. (Besides they're not really bikinis, but athletic wear.)The only "flaw" in this production is Michael Flatley himself, who can no loner do some of his amazing moves. All the other dancers are incredibly good and worth watching. If you can find the original video from the 90s, make sure to see Michael at his peak condition. He was amazing, especially in the finale scene.
More like Irish Burlesque than dance. What shines through the most is Flatley's arrogance. If you are expecting more quality in the Riverdance style. This is not it.
I have been a fan of Michael Flatley since the 90's and have seen several variations of the Lord of the Dance; this was on par with the original. Improvements were in the scene changes, which happened quickly and flawlessly, and the background/lighting that created an overall ambiance. Watching this brought back fond memories of when I first discovered the Lord of the Dance. I would've loved seeing this live.
Deserves 5 stars. All these great dancers and musicians are fun to watch and listen to, especially MF. Such a great continued revival of traditional Irish dance with modern flairs. Have to admit I'm a bigger fan of the hard shoe dances, but all was beautiful. Kudos to MF for all his hard work and keeping up his dancing chops.
MAGNIFICENT BEYOND DESCRIPTION. I WAS TRANSPORTED TO DUBLIN ONTO THAT STAGE AND MY FANTASY OF BEING IN THE DANCE TROUPE WAS TOO MUCH TO BEAR. MY OH MY. NOTHING MATCHES THIS NOW OR IN THE FUTURE.
