I am still half way through the book, and so far it has been well worth the read. I have lived in the USSR through the years described in the book, and therefore I have a lot to compare to from my own experience. The book gives a valuable fresh perspective of an American writer on the late Soviet society, is very well researched and based on the information that only recently has fully come to light. When a country disintegrates, it offers a rare glimpse into the power structure that is usually hidden from view in stable societies. There are several other books that study the decline and fall of the Soviet Union, to mention a few, by Judy Shelton, Chris Miller, Yegor Gaidar. These mostly address the economic decline and inflation. Taubman's book complements this with the political history. Glasnost was widely welcomed but it undermined the legitimacy of power of the party, and rapidly reduced its ability to govern. Deng Xiao Ping's reforms were wiser in that they foresaw this danger and prioritized economic reforms instead.

This is a lengthy book, exploring the many facets of Gorbachev and the many obstacles he faced (external and internal) in changing the Soviet Union. I found it absorbing, very well researched and balanced. Highly recommended.

Overall this book told me more about Mr. Gorbachev than I really needed to know, but that's a problem with me not the book. I wondered as I read how the author could present so much detail but when I found that the last quarter of the nearly 900 pages (print version) was required to list bibliography, personal interviews, meeting minutes, correspondence and much more, the validity of the text material seemed amply justified. This is truly a scholarly opus of major magnitude, cast in a form approachable by a general reader. It pays tribute to a man who, for a while at least, did much to put us on a course toward peace and stability. One can only hope that there are more Gorbachevs out there somewhere. .

I had to do a paper on a world leader for a Master's course and as I pondered the idea of whom I would choose, my mind went back to high school when Reagan uttered those famous words of "...tear down that wall." But, rather than do a paper on Reagan, I decided to look into the other side of that issue and Gorbachev landed right in the middle of my figurative lap.Taubman is undoubtedly an expert in the rise and fall of the USSR and this book on Mikhail Gorbachev was enlightening and even entertaining. Gorbachev was a fascinating man who rose from the poorest of the poor to the top of the Soviet power ladder in spite of having views contrary to most of his peers. This book gave a detailed account of his life with supporting documentation and provided me with a plethora of information from which to do a research paper.

Very thorough discussion of political life of Gobachev. Not much on the personal side other than brief observations made by others of what they thought his mood was. Also, a description or chart of the Soviet government organization would have been helpful in understanding the players and the events that unfolded.

Great book. I was afraid it would be dry and dull, but it flowed very well. Of course, it took a while to just run over the names without stopping to try to remember each and every person's name that would be referenced. It gave me a great insight into Gorbachev that the US politics and the Main Street Media completely missed. It pointed out the missed opportunities due to our insistence on viewing anything from Russia with suspicion. If only our "intelligence" had really known what was happening in Russia, Putin would never have gotten into power.

Gorbachev was one of the most remarkable and gifted, but tragically misunderstood, politicians of our times. It was his misfortune to hit the peak phase of his transformation of the politics of his nation and the world with President George H.W. Bush. Although Bush had a star-studded resume, he lacked the vision, depth of understanding, and gifts required for diplomacy and governance. America, Russia, and the world lost an historic opportunity for a better outcome for all of us. The depth of coverage of this book of internal Soviet politics was very beneficial.A great book about a great man.

William Taubman gives a balanced account of the life, accomplishments, and failures of Mikhail Gorbachev. Like his Moscow University friend Zdeněk Mlynář, Mr. Gorbachev sincerely believed that Communism could have a human face.Mr. Taubman clearly explains why the dual shock therapy of “Glasnost” and “Perestroika” that Mr. Gorbachev administered to the former Soviet Union led to 1) the temporary democratization of what is today authoritarian, anti-Western Russia, 2) the economic ruin of many of his fellow citizens, 3) the end of the cold war, 4) the reunification of Germany, and 5) the mostly peaceful disintegration of the former Soviet Union. Unsurprisingly, Mr. Gorbachev has been widely lionized in the West while widely despised in Russia.Furthermore, Mr. Taubman shows with much dexterity the lack of long-term vision of Western leaders, especially the American political elite in the late 1980s and 1990s. The U.S. political leadership displayed the same short-termism that Wall Street has displayed to this day in offering negligible economic assistance to both the fast-declining Soviet Union and Russia. Winston Churchill wrote on that subject: “The politician thinks about the next election – the statesman thinks about the next generation.” Like well-known Western invaders, these smug Western political leaders have grossly underestimated the resilience of the Russian people. Russia, the successor to the Soviet Union, is again a formidable world power despite its well-known weaknesses.In summary, Mr. Taubman makes a compelling argumentation that Mr. Gorbachev was exceptional as both a Soviet ruler and world statesman.
