I read this only because I downloaded the third and fourth at the same time. The third book in the Michael Gresham series was a bit far out and the writing seemed to be worse that the first two. This one, however, is truly a mess. There are errors, as though the proofreader and editor were sleeping through the book. The storyline is totally unbelievable and as you get further into the book it becomes even more believable! I really enjoy legal thrillers, but I think John Ellsworth may have run out of ideas, or is simply cranking them out so quickly that all he cares about is getting his next income source published. This was barely 2 stars in my opinion.
I gave it a 5 because I couldn't give it a 10. While it seemed to start a bit slow, it soon picked up both speed and engaging complexity. I read a lot of this genre and have become somewhat of an "armchair" lawyer. This author, John Ellsworth, has rocketed to the very top of my extensive list. This story kept my attention as well as early Stephen King, the master of misdirection. Ellsworth does not need misdirection to make this story interesting, he only needs to use his magnificent imagination. He does that so very well. I was captured and was almost sad to have to stop reading because the story ended. And ended well, in an almost "...lived happily ever after..." way.
I had a bit of difficulty swallowing both the generosity and criminality of "Racehorse". I suppose the ravages of unsuccessful chemotherapy could cause one to become a bit dimented, but really?...?Murder a player on the yacht I'm giving you after your PSTD and Disassociating wifes been murdered three times, all at once, by a player in a robbery who was both turning states evidence as well as framing the defendant who daughter is dying from poor judgement of power from an insurance company...I'm mean really?...?Just a tad bit extreme and an itybittybit far-fetched. But still, you are a published author, so who pray tell am I? Not a published author, for certain. You are in fact easy to read, I absolutely loved your first of this series and the second ran close to it. The third was getting a little more macabre but, again, who am I?
The books are improving. However, if this is a series, Mr. Ellsworth totally missed the point. In the previous book (#3), Danny (the wife) is running the office because she is the strong one. In the current book, she is suffering from PTSD and the couple is separated. In the previous book, Michael Gresham has quit the practice of criminal defense and is going to work for the DA's office. In the current book, he is still doing criminal defense work. At the end of Chapter 7, the time line seems totally out of whack. It makes no sense. Or maybe that is just me. Keep trying, Mr. Ellsworth. This book and the previous book have the tiniest font imaginable. And no page numbers. Can't you print in a font which is easier to read? These books are priced about the same as books published by the "big boys," which are easier to read and have page numbers.
Carlos the AntBeing retired and having Kindle Unlimited, one has the opportunity to read hundred of books. I fit into both those categories. In the past ten years I’ve read well over a thousand books, maybe started ten thousand. I can tell in a few paragraphs whether this is a book I will continue to read. Is it capturing my interest, or is it flowery, describing people’s clothing, landscape, buildings, etc. I can do that myself every day. I want a page turner, not a page skipper.I don’t mind a couple of sentences describing the surroundings, but that’s enough. Give me a paragraph of flora and fauna and I’m on to the next book. There are thousands from which to choose.Carlos the Ant is one that kept me spellbound from the start. What intrigued me is that I’m not sure who the good guys are vs. the bad guys. Everyone has human attributes, both positive and negative. Carlos, the bank robber and mastermind, is very sympathetic.Michael, Carlos’ lawyer, has no problem killing the man who killed his wife.Leticia, the prosecutor who wants the maximum sentence for Carlos, is also a murderer. My poor mind is struggling. Who is my hero? And I loved the finish. This is my kind of book!
This story about Carlos leaves nothing out. It hits high speed from the start. Along the way you will meet some very interesting, devious, cunning and sometimes brutal characters... both good and bad. There are many twists and turns and of course, Marcel is involved in many. What makes the end of this story bearable is that Book#6 in the Michael Gresham series is just a Kindel click away. If you liked #4, you will find some surprises in Carlos the Ant that are unexpected. - ‘ole joe. 🤓ðŸ™ðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸
I warn you. Once you start with John Ellsworth you won't be able to stop, his characters are complex and endearing. His plots are filled with surprise twist and turns.I liken his stories to a grand western where the white hats roll into town and toss out the bad guys. Enjoy but don't leave home without the next book in the series ready at your finger tips.
If you like legal thrillers with a surprising ending, this is your book! John Ellsworth does not disappoint the reader in this book. The characters while are like-able, have some flaws....some of them major! The writing is great, the story line is smooth and I highly recommend this book. I received a copy of this book and voluntaily reviewed it. Great book! Get it......
