Review

“An innovative approach that will appeal to those who question current claims of economic recovery.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Batra...details all the issues that led up to the U.S. wage gap, horrendous oil prices, and high-interest rates-and, yes, a loomingly alarming high-unemployment rate...Much food for thoughts; write your congresspeople now.” ―Booklist“This book really reads like a suspense novel. Turning each page, new tracks appear that the villain left behind in this economic whodunnit of all time. Of course, this is no idle fiction but the harsh truth of life in our world. The description of the economy the book offers is straightforward, yet profound and easy to grasp at the same time. Its message will have an impact. There is no way around it.” ―Thorsteinn Thorgeirsson, Senior Advisor to the Governor, Central Bank of Iceland.“Once again, Dr. Ravi Batra, one of America's most brilliant economists, knocks it out of the park. Everyone - particularly policy makers - needs to read this book! Brilliant, easy to understand, and filled with solid solutions to revive the American middle class.” ―Thom Hartmann, host, Thom Hartmann Radio Program and The Big Picture“For the aficionados of economics prophecy, Professor Batra has always been a legend: in this new work, however, his focus is on economic policy. He has little time for padding or rhetoric: instead, he sums up very quickly, in simple, lay terms, what must be done to bring to the U.S., and thence the world, out of its long-drawn doldrums. Even better, he shows how this might be accomplished bypassing the slow-moving processes of Congress, via Executive edicts. It is the economics primer for our times: a must read for all--especially President Obama with time still left in his tenure to carve himself a permanent niche in History.” ―Prof. Rajani Kanth, Harvard University

Best book ever on our economy. Has history of similar economies. Real facts. Only need to read small parts to understand everything. You get portions with formulas if you want to get into the weeds.

Spent too much ink on bragging about meeting Nancy Pelosi. Suggestion of a government sponsored bank to issue credit cards at reduced rates ignores the fact that banks set rates in response to risk and costs of obtaining deposits.

this is an excellent book. Once again Ravi nails it!

I'm not an economist, I just happened to have a BS degree in Economics supported by math and Dr Batra has clearly written what needs to happen now, understandable by anyone who can read his words. His candor, integrity and compelling humanitarian contribution providing us with "END Unemployment NOW" is a guide we can all use for voting, planning our activities, conversations on the street, in the coffee house, taking a fresh look at minimum wage laws and perhaps other issues. I think it will give clarity for some political issues you could be struggling with or just can't seem to grasp. Its like a page turning novel so start early in the evening as it could be a late night.

I have to confess that I had not encountered the work of Ravi Batra before this book. I will say that as someone who did lose their job in the economic downturn and had to find a way to climb back out afterward, most of the suggestions in this book have very good merit. In spite of what naysayers have said with President Obama's economic recovery and stimulus, the fact remains it could have been much worse if it had been handled the way that the banks, Wall Street and the corporations were left running things.Batra does have some good ideas that are going to take informed people, really all of us to put into action. When things like wage inequality are addressed and when education, development and entrepreneurship really start to matter again in this country, I think many of the ideas in this book will give America the changes it really needs to see in terms of economic prosperity and truly ending unemployment, or at least substantially reducing it.

The main cause of our current economic troubles is monopoly capitalism - domination by giant companies. Congress will not act to change this - it is divided and beholden to those interests. The president, however, could bring about a competitive-capitalism effect within two years via proclamations. We run the world's largest free-trade deficit. Balanced free-trade alone would create at least 5 million manufacturing jobs in just one year. The Federal deficit was less than $6 trillion in 2001 when Bush II took office, $17.8 trillion in 2014. Corporate profits in 2014 were near their al-time high. Federal debt rose from less than $10 trillion when Obama was elected to over $16 trillion by 2012, there were fewer people employed in 2012 than in 2006, and the poverty rate at the highest level in 50 years. His first year in office he signed a budget (3/09) with a $1.4 trillion deficit that included thousands of earmarks. Employment levels in 2014 finally caught up with 2007 levels, but the poverty level was still at a record 15.1%.Recent years have brought constant political battles - debt ceiling limits, budgets, the ACA, and a 16-day government shutdown over Republicans refusing to fund the ACA. Excessive concentration of wealth has reduced demand. The top income tax rate dropped from 70% to 50% in 1981, then 28% by 1986 - thanks to Voodoo economics. Meanwhile, the bottom-rate went from 1 to 15%, and unemployment income became taxed in 1987. The Social Security self-employment tax of 15.3% exceeds the 15% tax on capital gains. Rising lower-income rates contribute to the 'wage gap,' unemployment, and income disparity. Instead of raising real wages to close the 'wage gap,' politicians lower interest rates and create government deficits - both helping build bubbles.Suggests managing exchange rates to achieve balanced free trade, higher interest rates, and allowing prescription drugs to be imported from other nations.
