I don't have any children. But I picked a children's book for this month's free Prime selection, solely because none of the other options appealed to me in the slightest. I figured this could be useful if I ever randomly have to babysit for a friend or something.Even as an adult, I enjoyed the story. The illustrations were very well done. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone in the market for a young children's book, or anyone who like me just didn't want to read any of the other First Reads this month.
I like reading other reviewers' input before giving my own because they often look at things from a different angle than I do.My initial thoughts:Gretel is an annoying brat. She's rude and disrespectful - the sort of child who can annoy most anyone in 30 seconds or less; and who will probably end up in a viral cartoon where she's tased because she's resisting arrest when all she had to do was give her name and she would have been on her way.The banter between the narrator and Gretel isn't initially intuitive.There's far too much emphasis on current issues that set people off (Hansel's food allergy, feminism, rejection of authority).The artwork is eye catching, fun, and imaginative. Gretel's hair is, though impossible, marvelous.Taking a different direction on an old tale is refreshing.I'm surprised there aren't gender neutral pronouns, or at least a reference to them.Reading it again with a lighter view and ignoring what I didn't like:This could be an engaging book to read in tandem with a child or with a cohort - each person could read a different part or the person reading could change voices for the narrator when the narrator goes in and out of character. The listener could voice Gretel or Hansel. A parent could read the real story, an older sibling could read for the out of character narrator. Many possibilities.The story does bring up valid points - Gretel comes before Hansel alphabetically and that's usually how I decide things diplomatically (then again, Hansel always gets screwed over if we follow that rule so if we Truly wanted to be equal, it would alternate). It Is irresponsible to throw bread on the ground when there's a famine.Gretel is unusually forward-thinking for her age.Gretel sticks up for her brother and is sympathetic towards his feelings.After reading Whistlers Mom's review I found myself agreeing with some of her musings. Primarily, imagination. Who of us Hasn't had a child ad lib or ask questions while we're trying to read a story?If you don't overthink it, it's a good book. I normally don't overthink these things and it took me off guard that something about this book scratched that itch. Especially so because I find Dee Dee in the cartoon, Dexter's Laboratory, to be funny. She and Gretel are quite similar in their obstinate optimism, but I think the main difference is Dee Dee is dismissive to her peers rather than her parents / authority / elders.
Whenever the Kindle First Reads are released, I always jump at the chance to review children's books because I have six-year-old twins and they are always honest about what they think of stories. They love stories so I can read these books to them and give feedback based on their opinions as well as my own, from an adult's perspective. I read this story this morning before work and couldn't wait to share it with my twins before bedtime!It's Not Hansel and Gretel is a hilarious twist to the fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel. It's written by Josh Funk and illustrated by Edwardian Taylor. Pretty much everyone is familiar with Hansel and Gretel. Well, this version adds in characters from other fairy tales as well as A LOT of humor! The story contains dialogue from the characters as well as a third-person omniscient narrator who is trying to keep the story like the original. The story is 32 pages long and contains beautiful, colorful pictures.My twins and I loved this story! It's funny and kept them hooked throughout the entire story. I have a Kindle Oasis and this book cannot be read on that but tablets like my kids' Kindle Fires and my Android phone, using the Kindle app, work really well for this story. If you have younger children, especially in the four to eight-year-old age range, they will love it! Even adults will enjoy this humorous fairy tale!
I love children's books, but I don't usually review them. I strggled with this book.What I liked:--This was a fun twist on a fairy tale. Loved the unicorn spin and the ending. Seems relevant to kids today.--I liked that the "narrator" was really the bad guy of the story.--I liked that the kids take responsibility in the story.What I didn't like:--I thought the conversation bubbles across the book made it a little hard to follow.--The flow of the story felt really choppy.--I could see this being a hard book for younger kids to read and follow.Overall, I think this could be a fun read-aloud, but it was not my favorite reading it on the Kindle App. It is not one I will add to my library.Happy reading!!
This book was awesome, just awesome!!!! We all chuckled while reading out loud. The drawings were colorful and well done (no pun to the oven) More please!!
