Who Was Ben Franklin?

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-This is an often funny, always engaging introduction to one of America's most fascinating founding fathers. Franklin is affectionately and respectfully depicted as a man of insatiable intellectual curiosity with a tireless creative and inventive mind who played indispensable roles in the War for Independence and the establishment of the U.S. government. Fradin's anecdotal presentation describes all of the important contributions and inventions the man gave to the world: a national postal system, the first public library, the first volunteer fire department, bifocals, the Franklin stove, the lightning rod, and his revolutionary experiments with electricity. His public service on behalf of the Continental Congress as a diplomat and representative, and his contributions to the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution also receive significant attention. The discussions of Franklin's childhood growing up as one of 17 children and his relationship with his son William who stayed loyal to England during the War for Independence add an interesting personal dimension. Readers are left with an impression of a man of almost unfathomable genius whose many astonishing contributions to American culture, politics, society, and science still profoundly affect us. O'Brien's black-and-white amusing cartoon illustrations are an effective complement to the lighthearted text. A fun, informative introductory biography that will inspire many readers to learn more about this fascinating man.Edward Sullivan, White Pine School, TN Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 3-5. Few historic figures have led a life as varied and interesting as Benjamin Franklin's. From chasing a twister to helping write the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, Franklin's career was anything but dry and dusty. But in an attempt to make the fascinating material readable for third-graders, Fradin has sacrificed his usual smooth writing style. Here, the sentences are choppy, abrupt, and frequently interrupted by drawings. The sequence of events wanders considerably, as well, which will make it difficult for younger students to follow along. The cover is comically enticing, and there are plenty of small, lively, black-and-white sketches, including scenes from the text and labeled diagrams of typesetting. A time line is appended, but there are no notes, bibliography, or index. This is only for libraries needing additional material. Susan Dove LempkeCopyright © American Library Association. We have read several of the "Who Was" books, so when our youngest child chose to do a book report on Ben Franklin, we knew that the "Who Was Ben Franklin" book was a must have. It's easy enough for a younger child to read (grades 2-4) and contains lots of interesting information. If your child is interested in learning about an historical figure, or has a research assignment or a biography book report to complete, this book (and the series of Who Was books) would be a great choice.

My nine year old read this for an AR exam. Too many details that seem irrelevant, especially for Elementary students.. ex .. family feuds and marriage problems? Really??

I love this series and buy them all. I always learn something, and it's great for kids. I have them read the relevant books before any trips we take (we went to Boston, so we read all of the books in this series on the Founding Fathers and Revolutionary War before we went and did the Freedom Trail).

Not a historical masterpiece, but the joyful and youthful introduction to young readers of this extraordinary American icon.Fun tidbits to share in a beginning reader format. Just like the huge head and diminished belly, not a "World Book" reference. This is not a resource for high school or college term papers, but a joyful storytelling to get young readers interested in the Kite guy. Will use to supplement material for elementary school storytelling and presentations, along with several other elementary biographies.

Most kids like these type of books especially ones that ask a lot of questions. Easy to read and follow. Will be ordering more of these type of books in the future.

I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.

I bought this for my 7 year-old daughter prior to a trip to Washington D.C. The books are for a more advanced reader then a 1st grader, but contains engaging stories, historical facts and drawings. My daughter enjoys having these books read to her! It's a win-win situation having her learn about the history of the U.S. and having fun at the same time.

my kids all love the who/what was series.

Love, love, love! I bought this as a Christmas gift for my younger brother. He's a junior in high school, and recently decided he didn't want to attend college because it was too hard. I wanted to give him something that he could refer to throughout his journey, something that would help 'guide' him through those harder moments. I also paired it with a copy of my college transcript (I had a few bumps throughout the road myself!) to show him it's okay to stumble and fall. As long as you get back up.It was an encouraging gift, and most importantly, a very practical one. The tips are quick and organized enough that my brother doesn't feel overwhelmed skimming through them. The different sections of the book are logical and make it easy to jump to a set of tips most relevant to what you need. Now, he's ready to study again for his ACTs, and start planning out school visits for this summer. Overall, this was without a doubt one of the best gifts under the tree this year!

This little book is very helpful, especially the middle chapters. I have been taking college classes for 8 years at three different institutions, so I have been around the block. I bought this for a friend who is graduating high school and going to college soon. I read the book and marked tips I thought she would find useful. I would recommend this book to anyone planning to go to college. While I'm impartial, someone who is an avid atheist may not like the many religious/Christian tips.

Surprisingly, the high school senior that I bought this for seemed to really like it. Opened it up at Christmas and sat there reading it while the other "kids" opened their gifts. Really seemed interested. The organization and presentation of the material is designed for a short attention span and that's a good thing. Some really obvious points listed in the book, but honestly, college freshman sometimes need to hear the obvious.

Please note that this book is written for girls really. My son kept saying... It says things like, "remember that facebook is a place for you to talk about issues with your professors, homework, and boyfriends". "just because you have a sorority party, doesn't mean your professor is going to delay the exam". Although we had a good laugh from it, it was not for boys. I will keep it for my daughters!

Everyone going off to college should read this! I read it quickly first to make sure it was appropriate for my daughter who is going to UF. It jogged my memory and many times i thought, "Oh, I forgot to tell her that. And that!" I ended up buying two more as gifts. Very informative with nuggets of information that will truly make a difference.

I purchased this book because I'm starting college in a month. It has been extremely helpful and made me think about things I wouldn't have thought about otherwise. It had many good tips about every topic. It helped me learn how to stay focused on my goal, which, of course, is graduating on time. I really recommend this!

Got this as a christmas gift for an upcoming freshman. Has good solid advice and some that hit close to home. Doesn't suckerpunch but doesn't hold back either with some of the information. A realistic and honest approach. Love it!

I purchased this for my daughter. She is a junior and getting ready to begin touring universities. I read it in one sitting and although the short passages of advice seem, well...short...they are extremely helpful. Any young man or woman would learn quite a bit by reading through this small but informative book.

Its a travesty that C and C++ are being used to design critical systems in things like aircraft and cars where human life is at risk since it is impossible to prove the reliability of the these languages. They are completely unsafe languages that put the entire responsibility of correctness on the programmer. Ada is a language that is safe by design in much the same way as functional languages like ML are safe, due to strong type checking and a checked and type strong module system. But somehow Ada has the reputation for being a dead language, so only very few companies make use of it for embedded software. Two reasons that Ada never received general acceptance was that it came out in 83 and such a large language was not able to fit on the tiny processors and memory of that time (1mhz, 64k) so it had a undeserved reputation of being slow. Keep in mind C++ was considered too slow to use at that time. The other reason that Ada never caught on is there are not any easy to understand books on Ada. All books currently out on Ada are very large and dense. Ada is not a language that relys on gimics, but is a collection of software practices that work together to make a very strong language. Norman Cohen's book came out in 86, only 3 years after the 83 standard was released. It covers all the advanced topics of language design like generics, packages, tasks (threads), access types (pointers), sub classing (object orientation) in a way that is just as understandable as any current books on these subjects.Regrettably I bought the first edition of this book covering the Ada 83 standard as I was not aware of the 2nd edition. I have since ordered updated version of this book.

For comprehensive coverage of Ada, you have just two choices, this book and Barnes' _Programming in Ada 2005_. In brief, Cohen is much longer than Barnes, giving more details, but it is quite dense. Barnes has the advantage that it covers Ada 2005 and is more readable, but it misses a lot of the details found in Cohen.I would not recommend Cohen as an introductory tutorial. Naiditch's _Rendezvous with Ada 95_ is vastly better for that. Naiditch gives more thorough and readable explanation of fewer topics, and uses code samples that more simply illustrate the concepts. The first edition can be had very cheaply, so you may be wondering if you would be satisfied with that. If your goal is to understand Ada 95, definitely not. Not only did Ada 95 introduce significant changes to Ada programming style, the second edition is an extensive reorganization, revision, and extension of the first. I only wish the readability had been improved as well. One thing about the first edition, though, it did have nicer paper.

Great book on Ada

I got this book as a good yet light introduction into ADA, since I dont know whether I will ever use it or not, but I wanted to get an overview. I also got it used from one of the sellers here for 50 cents or so, which is why I wont complain. However if you are like me and want to get it for the same reason, you should know that the descriptive text of this book is wrong. This book is NOT about ADA95 but the 83 version!Like I said, for me it's only to have an overview over the language and get some tutorial material. If I decide to stick around, I already knew I will have to get a newer book to learn the 2005 and 2012 version anyway, so I wont make a fuzz over it, since I paid under 5$ with shipping. The book itself seems to be good, lots and lots of text with many examples. I haven't had time to read through it of course and it will be months before I could judge it's quality since I'm doing this on the side only so I give 4 stars as to not mess up the overall rating. I subtract1 star because the descriptive text for the book is misleading though.

Not about the latest Ada out there but an excellent book for the beginner I am.

I used this book for a review for a job interview. It is an easy read and even though a bit dated the material is still relevant.

Was forced to buy this book. I didn't get anything out of this. Ada in my opinion is one of the worst languages. The strong typing is way over the top.

Over two years back, I had to write and test huge amount of code (about 200-330K LOC) in Ada 95 (I had over 8 yrs. Ada 83 experience) in very short time. A colleague suggested to use this book. It has helped me in every way. The book contains very clear explanations about all the new concepts in Ada and it also covers the real-time issues, OOP, low-level multilingual programming, distributed programming etc.Although, it was written for the "C" programmers who are new to Ada, I have since then worked on two more major programs and this is the only Ada95 book I am continuously using together with the Ada 95 LRM.

Great book. There is much hope there. Excellent read. Well written!!

Ferguson steps out of his comfort zone on this one and IT'S AMAZING!

For some reason finding books by this author Will Ferguson, here in the United States is very difficult, which surprises me since he is a Canadian author, so it is not like he is only published in Albania. That being said I have read multiple books by this author and they are all fantastic. He writes both fiction and non fiction and each one is worth your time especially Beyond Belfast, Hokkaido Highway Blues/Hitching Rides with Buddha, two excellent sort-of travel narratives.419 is fiction rooted in Fact, regarding annoying email/phone solicitation scams, that are run from Ghana. Then there is Road Trip Rwanda. This is a sad, tragic, yet somehow redemptive story of one country who after suffering a genocide so horrific, so unspeakable, you can’t possibly read this book and not be shaken, not be moved, not be amazed that the country has somehow moved on.There are people who don’t believe there is evil in the world. I defy anyone to read about the genocide in Rwanda, and still cling to this belief. This wasn’t “the government turning on a portion of the population, this was the wholesale slaughter of 800,000- 1,000,000 people. Neighbor turning on neighbor, lifelong friends being slaughtered. You can not travel anywhere in the country where whole towns weren’t killing dens, churches where Tutsis were lured under the promise of a safe haven, when the reality was it would be easier kill that many more of them in one place. The author struck up a friendship with his travel companion for this book Jean Claude, while in Canada and was moved by his thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity, and they decide to visit the country that Jean Claude was born in and escaped at the start of the genocide. At one point in the book the author asks jean Claude why he is so giving so generous and Jean Claude replies (I am paraphrasing) “it haunts you, why did I survive. Why did I get out. A 19 year old kid, I wasn’t married, I didn’t have children, I wasn’t important to the economy, why did I live when so many other were slaughtered?Nearly as difficult to fathom is how Rwanda has moved on. How so many of the killers were never punished. How survivors see the very people who slaughtered their entire families, walking freely, down the same street they are on.Yet Rwanda has moved on, some things are questionable regarding how they have moved on, but they have and on a continent with nothing but screwed up countries they have excelled. The book is not all doom and gloom and depression, there are some parts that are quite funny, which makes the story that much more accessible. Finally you will also learn how guilty/useless/ the UN, The Catholic Church and the French government acted and behaved, in enabling this to happen, and the aftermath. This is easily one of the best books I have ever read.

I had to re-learn Trigonometry after having learned it some 35 years ago. I picked up this title and a popular contemporary text (Larson et al). For explanations of various concepts, this book is far superior to the Larson text. With any math book that claims to be accessible, one worry is - Is the content easy because all the difficult parts have been left out ? The Humongous book covers all the Trig topics in the Larson text, so it definitely covers the Trig topics in a High School level course. So it is not a dumbed down book at all !Pluses :+ I love the fact that the author explains almost all Trig concepts with examples and intuitive appeal. There was very little that I had to memorize outright+ Michael Kelley writes exceptionally clearly and explains concepts extremely well+ Any student that works through every problem should improve their understanding considerably+ At a cost of $15-$20, this is a terrific investment+ Written in a very nice, very accessible style that will appeal to math-phobes+ One can work through the examples in the book quickly. They are nicely laid out (simple problems to more advanced ones as the chapter progresses)Minuses :- Hardly any proofs, but for this one can easily refer back to the Larson (or any other) text- I spotted some errors in the worked out examples, but I am sure that Mr Kelley will fix these in future editions- Several way to do any problem, there were simpler approaches to solve some of the problems- Some topics (eg converting polar equations to rectangular form) don't receive adequate or good coverage. For such topics, I look at internet resources and solved several problems from the textbook. These Minuses don't detract from this excellent, invaluable book much.Highly recommended as a study guide in a Trigonometry course or for self study ! Need to work out each example yourself to derive the maximum benefit from the book.I like this book so much that I bought the Algebra book for my middle school aged son, and I will be buying all of Mr. Kelley's other books soon.

Michael Kelley's series is the best. I have used some of his other books (Algebra and Calculus) as tutoring aids. I needed to replace the Calculus and Algebra books, so I bought this one as well.It did not disappoint. Like his other books, Kelley uses LOTS of examples and problems and they all have good explanations. For example, I was tutoring someone last night who was struggling with a Trig problem that required factoring. We talked through how to factor, and when I turned to that section in Kelley's book, there were a few problems that required factoring, and Kelley walked the reader through factoring!

I had never been moved to laugh out loud by a math book until reading this one. Kelley provides crystal clear explanations laced with a dry wit that actually makes the highly repetitive practice needed to master trig almost enjoyable. This is not your typical math textbook where even after reading through a chapter you might be just as lost as when you started because it assumes too much prior knowledge. At the same time, nothing in this book feels so dumbed down as to be patronizing. I highly recommend it for both trig beginners as well as people brushing up on old trig concepts to make calculus classes easier.

Nice oversized book which I wanted and I could use as a workbook for reviewing trig. Pretty thorough and very step by step worked out answers. Clear explanations and I like choices for the order of workng out an answer. Maybe too bulky for some and too tedious for others but just right for me.

Awesome book for learning high school trigonometry. I unfortunately discovered that I am better at trigonometry than I had thought, after I bought it.

Not a practice workbook. It is more like a study book with a few examples and lots of wordy explanations for one example.

Nephew needed help w/tri- for prep academy. And I'm so glad to say he passed with flying colors and graduated.. GREAT BUY!!

The author organized the subjects carefully to cover the material and develop the intuitive problem solving required. Also the book author organized answers to every problem for best recognition of steps taken to solve the problem.
