Lovely book.
I do not think the Kindle edition of this book features the illustrations of the print copy. There are a lot of titles and no accompanying illustration. Very disappointing.
A real history of woodcut in the twentieth century, or even just the early part of the twentieth century, is still to be written, or maybe it can’t be written; one book couldn’t possibly summarize it. The 1920s and 1930s were an extraordinary time for woodcut art, with many artists and many distinct personalities. This is a reproduction of a 1927 book by the print connoisseur Malcolm Salaman, surveying woodcut artists of Europe and North America. It is not a comprehensive overview. Mexico, for example, is not represented, and some countries are only represented by a few artists. Still, it gives one an idea of the extent of activity at that time. Some of the artists in this book have been remembered better than others, but many are extraordinary. Looking at the print by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, it is sad to know that he died in Auschwitz. Fascism and World War II ended the lives of many artists and this vibrant period of woodcut came to an end.It’s good that Dover has republished this and made it available. Other representative publications of this era can only be found in large libraries, like Herbert Furst’s “The Modern Woodcut†or Clare Leighton’s “Wood Engraving of the 1930’s.†Edward Gordon Craig’s “Woodcuts and Some Words†very much deserves to be in print again. One drawback of this volume: it’s from 1927 and the reproductions are not at the level of quality of 2017. Some of the images are gray and muddy. The one reproduction of a linocut by Claude Flight does not do him justice. But if you are interested in this art form and this era you will want to become familiar with this book.
