Not sure how they could have missed the fact that Colorado has one of the only diamond producing areas in North America - on the Colorado-Wyoming border North West of Fort Collins. Makes you wonder how many other things they didn't include. Certainly not comprehensive.

A nice guide to identify local gems and minerals. There's a lot of general information not specific to Colorado, but useful none the less. Many photos that lack necessary color and definition, as if they were photos digitized at the advent of photo scanning technology, otherwise accurate, and well organized.

This book is awesome! It's lamenated and pocket-size-ish, and has maps of the local where the specimens are located, and big pictures of each rock type. It's exactly what you want for identifying rocks found in Colorado. Love it!!

Nice little book with decent pictures. If only my eyes were younger and stronger. Being a field guide, the book is small, with small pics and text on example pages. If the pics and small text were of a little better clarity (for older eyes), then 5 stars.

Very good book. Great layout(love the quick identification section in the front) easy to understand and made with thick water ressistant paper. A perfect book for a novice rock hound

I bought this and sent it to my son, he really enjoys it.

Very informative guide for the CO rock hound! It's a great field guide on what to look for in stones, minerals and gems in the CO region--I haven't had a chance to actually use it yet, but have read it and it seems to contain great knowledge by the writer on what to look for when prospecting.

This guide is great for kids and adults. Love the section that helps you identify any rock you find by color and characteristics. We are in the process of finding as many of the Colorado rocks as possible.

The guy has a knack for this writing, Most stories are lifted from reputed events which helps his credibility. Pelton appears to write anything and everything, my preference is his preternatural material-not his history lessons.

Interesting..have been reading it for awhile.

First of all, the book is written such that every sentence, or at most three sentences or so, is made to be a paragraph. This means the actual content in the book cannot be estimated by checking the number of pages. For example, the number of pages in the book is over 527, while the nook gives me 177 pages. To give you a feel for it:The actual content of the book is another thing.Instead of taking the material and boiling it down into its essence, using a few relevent quotes to indicate various things, he covers the same material repeatedly and in a disorganized way, bringing nothing really new to the book. For example, on the section dealing with the origin of Satan and the demons. As far as I can see, there are essentially two positions, with perhaps a little twist on this or that idea, but not really making a fundamental difference. There is the side of the people that believe that God did indeed create the Devil, And some include the idea that God made evil as well. Then there is the other group that say that God did not create the devil, but created Lucifer, an angel that was perfect and good until later, when for some reason he turned evil.this is actually what the Bible teaches, going on to say that it was Lucifer's pride that led to his becoming evil, that he wanted to usurp God's position.Okay, you get the idea of the sentence parafraphs.Anyway, instead of summarizing these two positions and giving some relevent quotes demonstrating each, perhaps showing some variations different Christian leaders take, he jumps back and forth from reporting one or the other side, giving the name of the leader and then quotes such as "Certainly God made the devil!" or "God doesn't make evil, lucifer as made a perfect angel." And he reports the opinions of several leaders on eachs ide, some of the statements being nearly identicle for two or more of the persons he is quoting. So it is a lot of pages for very little meat. But what is much worse, at least for me, is his obsession with exclamation points. Oohhh MY! He is one of the very worst I've ever seen. I counted them up in a couple of different ways. First I just counted the "paragraphs" and noticed how many out of the total ended with an exclamation point. Out of 263 there were 183 that ended with the point. Counting up insividual sentences I got 41 sentences out of 61 with exclamation points. It is utterly absurd, and makes me feel that I am being yelled at constantly. People who misuse the exclamation point apparently are incapable of distinguishing between what is truly remarkable or important and the general content of their work, OR they are simple-minded folk who find everything shocking, amazing, astounding, and startling. As for the book, can't say that it impresses me much. Much I already knew, while some of the material is unbiblical or inconclusive when it need not be. Like the priest saying that the cause of Lucifer's fall from heaven was unclear, when the bible clearly says he fell due to pride and his desire to be God. I suppose for someone knowing little about demon possession it may shed some light, but it just as well could confuse given that opposite views are reported while Pelton takes no position himself. In fact, he says very little at times, filling space with quotes. I will say that at least for me, it was a waste of money, but to each his own, right?

.  Dr. Kaplan's book is an essential guide for clinicians and parents for understanding, diagnosing, and treating what is often mistakenly referred to as pediatric bipolar disorder.--Susan D. Mayes, Ph.D., Chief Clinical Psychologist and Professor of Psychiatry, Penn State College of MeI'm glad there's a book out there for parents who want to dispute the bipolar diagnosis-there are certainly enough on the other side. Lawrence Diller, M.D. Developmental Pediatrician and author of Running on Ritalin, Remembering Ritalin and others.Kaplan's contrarian perspective would be mainstream in Australasian or European psychiatry, where pre-pubertal cases of bipolar disorder are still considered extremely rare. ...this scholarly yet fast paced read has a place on ... bookshelves. Review

"With his carefully crafted examination of the lack of a substantial basis for the existence of Bipolar Disorder in prepubescent children, Kaplan throws down the gauntlet to the media, the pharmaceutical companies hawking drugs to 'stabilize moods' and the researchers who have 'invented' this condition. Parents reading this book should be assured that their preadolescent child does not have bipolar disorder, and Kaplan not only describes some of the sources of the worrisome behaviors of aggression, anger, hyperactivity, mood swings, and difficulties negotiating the social and educational demands of childhood, but also strongly endorses effective treatments, including medication, behavioral interventions, and family support." (Lee Combrinck-Graham, MD, Associate Clinical Professor, Yale Child Study Center)"At last there is a book that clinicians can refer parents for an alternative view of the 'bipolar child.' Dr. Kaplan has tackled a highly controversial topic area and with his significant experience and familiarity with the relevant research literature has crafted a work that provides parents a guide to better understand the symptoms, classification, and treatment of the child with severe mood dysregulation and problematic, highly labile behavior. The author has not disguised his own views but does provide both sides of the bipolar disorder diagnosis and its treatment in grade-school children. This is done in an easily led, almost chatty manner for parents and those caring for this very difficult pediatric population. The book should be of value to primary care physicians and related health sector and school personnel and parents of these children." (Theodore A. Petti, MD, MPH, Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School – University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey)"Your Child is Not Bipolar presents in clear prose a very well-informed, solidly argued expose of a current, highly problematic, and misleading psychiatric diagnosis in children. The author is a seasoned clinician, researcher and academic who is passionate about improving diagnostic accuracy in the field." (Daniel Safer, MD, Associate Professor, Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine)"Stuart Kaplan has written a brilliant, scholarly, and long overdue book providing compelling evidence that what is often diagnosed as pediatric bipolar disorder is not true bipolar disorder. In over 30 years of clinical practice, I have seen many children considered to have pediatric bipolar disorder and have yet to meet one whose symptoms are not better explained by combined ADHD and ODD, consistent with Dr. Kaplan's contention. He eloquently interweaves clinical case examples with research evidence producing a convincing argument against pediatric bipolar disorder. His book is an essential guide for clinicians and parents for understanding, diagnosing, and treating what is often mistakenly referred to as pediatric bipolar disorder." (Susan D. Mayes, PhD, Chief Clinical Psychologist and Professor of Psychiatry, Penn State College of Medicine)"Dr. Kaplan's book carries an extremely important message to parents, one that could change the course of your child's health and well-being. These psychotropic medications which are given so freely to every misbehaving child who has been wrongly labeled bipolar, have serious side effects and consequences, some of which cannot be reversed. Before you jump to the conclusion that your child has bipolar disorder, you owe it to your child to read this book. You could be saving your child's future and maybe his life." (Elizabeth J. Roberts, MD, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist; Author of Should You Medicate Your Child's Mind?)

Dr. Kaplan has provided a quality review of the non-science that led to the dramatic increase in the diagnosis of biopolar disorder in children; the disorder that never was. Thus, we have another, on a very short list, who is willing to stand and proclaim that the king has no clothes. It is beyond understanding to note that physicians have elected to medicate thousands of children who present "symptoms," consistent with a variety of other diagnoses, normal development, or rather common behavioral problems. This book is a must read for every physician (including psychiatrists), psychologist, social worker, and counselor in practice or training.Thomas McKnight, Ph.D., ABPP

Medical Diagnosis has become a "check list" and this book helps to bring some common sense to a diagnosis that has become the "flavor of the month", often misdiagnosed and which often opens the channel to inappropriately medicate children with very powerful pharmaceutical agents.

Dr. Kaplan has hit on a topic that is very interesting and manages to bring to the forefront aspects of mental illness that have been long overlooked. He is not afraid to challenge the leading authorities on mental health and in the process shows that there are misleading "facts" that dictate care which has infiltrated mainstream medicine. He shows how a misdiagnosis has even prevented the administration of proper care under the guise of 'contraindications'. This is a must-read for anyone who has a child with a mental health disorder to become fully aware and informed, and makes the correction of a lot of misinformation being fed to the public.

While perhaps rare, to say childhood bipolar does not exist is fallacy. This thinking is exactly what led to a misdiagnosis in my bipolar child. Several hospitalizations later, with the help of lithium and abilify all mania has subsided. With a little SSRI to assist with depressive symptoms and adjudicative light therapy my child is back to a normal baseline. Please explain to me, Dr. Kaplan, how lithium was the key medication to normalizing mood swings in a 9 year old? From so depressed he would not smile and slept all day to inability to sit still, pressured speech, loss of cognitive function, agitation and anger? A child who was performing GT math to failing grades - and within weeks of lithium reaching therapeutic levels the return to cognitive ability? This is the response of a bipolar brain to lithium. It may be rare, but do those few rare patients a favor and at least acknowledge THERE ARE SOME BIPOLAR CHILDREN. I know - I live with one.Having said that: I agree that giving stimulants to all children is a mistake. I suspect with future genomic studies we will be able to test and tell which children may benefit and who won't - and probably determine many other medical conditions patients are at risk for developing. Perhaps in the near future we will be able to prevent patients from even having a first mania... pre-treat hypertension, cancer, cystic fibrosis, bipolar, depression, etc...But one thing is certain: Statements that contain 'all or none' or 'black and white' thinking can lead to misdiagnosis... there will always be shades of grey. How you label 'grey' is irrelevant - but please recognize it exists... and in an all white world, you just might not see grey or black because you are not looking.

Your Child Does Not Have Bipolar Disorder took me a long time to read; however, it was worth it. It is written in an academic style and geared towards professionals and lay people that have an intense interest in pediatric bipolar disorder. I was fortunate to be able to review of free copy of the book.Dr. Kaplan is very thorough with his evidence of studies as he presents his argument against childhood bipolar disorder. He does not leave anything out of his opinions and professionally presents the reasons why diagnosis of this disorder greatly expanded in the last two decades. He effectively presents an alternative diagnosis, gives specific examples, and suggests treatment for them. He also suggests why some parents do not want to treat ADHD with pharmaceuticals and how this affects their children. He describes the similar symptoms of different diagnoses and conditions and gives examples of his own specific treatments for each in the ending chapters.Dr. Kaplan's credentials, professor of psychiatry at Penn State College of Medicine, has board certification in child and adolescent psychiatry, allowing him to challenge popular views of pediatric bipolar disorder and guide parents to understand diagnoses of mood disorders and aggressive behaviors. Many parents, teachers, and therapists seem to want a quick, catchall group with which to categorize children with bad behaviors, and Dr. Kaplan explains the effect this has on untreated or wrongly diagnosed children. He challenges leading mental health therapists and backs his evidence with a convincing presentation of facts and figures that are given to the public. Your Child Does Not Have Bipolar Disorder informed me about other mental health conditions in addition to bipolar disorder, specifically, oppositional defiant disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and adult bipolar disorder. This is an excellent learning book. Dr. Kaplan also explains how these conditions are defined and explained in the DSM-IV. He says that many studies group children and adolescents together; this affects statistics that the public sees.Chapter one describes adult bipolar disorder and the DSM System of diagnostics. Chapter two describes pediatric bipolar disorder in depth and explains the difference between it and the two conditions it is most commonly confused with, ADHD and ODD. Chapter three reviews studies and causes of pediatric bipolar disorder that support Dr. Kaplan's assertion that bipolar disorder is not present in children under 12 years of age. Chapter four explains the how cultures influence shape mental illness, how the media and professionals have supported the diagnosis of pediatric bipolar disorder, and the consequences of misdiagnosis on children. Chapter five introduces child and adolescent depression, its symptoms, and coexistence with other disorders, while chapter six acknowledges the existence of adolescent bipolar disorder along with its misdiagnosis.Part two of the book discusses the merits of three medications for bipolar disorder, slanted clinical trials, and how they contribute to public misinformation and diagnostic errors. Dr. Kaplan discusses stimulant medications used to treat ADHD, the Multimodal Treatment of ADHD study undertaken in the later 1990s, and its findings. I understood that he felt that ADHD was the main condition that is mistaken for pediatric bipolar disorder. Dr. Kaplan is very much in favor of treating ADHD with stimulants because of the improvement in behavior and life circumstances that children enjoy with a correct diagnosis and treatment.Dr. Kaplan ended the book with, what I thought, was the best part: treatment advice for parents. This came from his own practice and included thoughts on stimulant and antipsychotic medications. He outlines the four stages of his Family Based Behavior Modification Program for Oppositional Children and explains family dynamic considerations and the therapist's role in supportive family therapy.Your Child Does Not Have Bipolar Disorder: How Bad Science and Good Public Relations Created the Diagnosis (Childhood in America)

Dissuading people from reading this book is doing a disservice to anyone affected by the issue it addresses. Read with an open mind, this book may be an invaluable resource to parents, professionals, and others struggling to help a child with symptoms that may be mistakenly ascribed to pediatric bipolar disorder. Written by a prominent child and adolescent psychiatrist, this book presents a clear and logical argument that should be heard and considered, if not embraced by anyone involved in the care of a child whose symptoms have resulted in a diagnosis of pediatric bipolar disorder.

Review

"True Thai, with its thoughtful recipes and arresting photographs, brings the bright and enchanting spirit of Thailand to life. It is a feast for the eyes and the imagination—a pleasure both to read and to cook from." -James Oseland, editor-in-chief of Rodale's Organic Life and author of Cradle of Flavor   "I'm so happy to see a beautiful, imaginative Thai cookbook by a talented Thai-born chef and cook—it's about time! The location photos transport us to Thailand and the recipes are anchored in Hong Thaimee's knowledge of Thai home cooking and street food riches." -Naomi Duguid, author of Burma: Rivers of Flavor   "Hong Thaimee has become a voice for authentic, modern Thai cuisine and an influencer in the culinary industry. Without a doubt, I will soon be making one of her recipes." -Jean-Georges Vongerichten  "True Thai is pulsating with flavor, color, and passion. The love to which this book is dedicated comes through on every page—a bold welcome to Hong Thaimee's table—TRUE THAT!" -Anita Lo, Annisa   "Hong Thaimee's True Thai is the Thai cookbook we've been waiting for in the United States. Chef Thaimee was a passionate competitor against me on Iron Chef America, but my favorite thing about her book is the inspiration she gets from her family to bring tantalizing flavors to your table." -Bobby Flay, author of Brunch at Bobby's"Hong Thaimee brings humor to tales of her own childhood in Chiang Mai. As you turn the pages of her lush cookbook, you feel as though she's taking you along on a family vacation to Southern Thailand, Bangkok, and New York, and it's a privilege."-Cookbooks365.com"Who can resist a Thai cookbook that takes you beyond the familiar favorites at your corner restaurant, while still being more or less doable on a weeknight (especially if you live near a well-stocked Asian grocer)? I know I can't. Yes, you'll find pad Thai and yum nua in here. But mah mah instant noodles? With crab and Chinese broccoli? Candied salted chiles? Watermelon and Thai basil fruit shake? Hong Thaimee, chef at Ngam in New York, doesn't hesitate to go there, either."-NPR BOOKS"The recipes are very well written and ever enticing."-THE HUFFINGTON POST "True Thai is one of the best Thai cookbooks on the market. . . True Thai is particularly flavorful and healthy. Once you try it, it will become part of your culinary experience." -THE WASHINGTON BOOK REVIEW

I see all these five star reviews and I think, "What right do you have to review a cookbook without cooking from it?" If you think the same, fret not, I'm here. I'm not a novice to Thai cooking, as I've cooked approximately 70% of the recipes in Pok Pok and 50% of the recipes in Leela's Simple Thai Food. I've also been to Thailand for a few weeks last year so I know more or less how things should taste. This book arrived a few days ago and I had the ingredients for the Ook Gai so I thought why not give that a spin. It turned out HORRIBLY WRONG. it was very soupy with the 4 cups (1 quarter) of chicken broth, and not salty enough, and definitely not creamy like the pictures stated. I followed the recipe's suggested 20 minute+10 minute cooking time and the amount of liquid in the pot was way too much. I left the stove on to simmer for an hour more to see if the sauce reduced but it's still too watery and definitely not creamy like the picture looks.I'll try more recipes and edit my review, but so far not so good.Edit 1:Cooked the coconut rice with mango today. When I read the recipe I found it weird that she would use jasmine essence instead of pandan, but whatever floats her boat as long as it taste good. Well, after cooking, I can say that it cannot be described with the adjective "good", as the 1tsp of jasmine essence really messed things up. The whole pot of rice was very very very jasminy, and it was quite nasty. Had to throw out the whole pot, and in the future I'll stick with Leela's recipe if I want a sweeter version and the Pok Pok one if I want a slightly salty version. I'm gonna cook the Green curry in a few days and see how that goes, but I'm very skeptical.Edit 2: Made the green curry today. Can't say it's the best green curry I've made, but it's edible. Be sure to only use 2 tablespoons of fish sauce and 2 tablespoons of palm sugar as opposed to the 3 called for in the book. 3 would be waaay too much for just 1 can of coconut milk. Also I find the 8 minute simmering time for a curry is WAY too short. I've tasted it at 8 minutes then at 1 hour and the 1 hour tastes much more flavorful.

A beautiful cookbook which recreates the passion and honesty of simple family/comfort Thai that Ngam NYC (Chef Hong's Restaurant) is known for and what has made her restaurant the best Thai in New York City (according to Village Voice) which is no mean feat. Chef Hong came up to Vancouver last year to teach some cooking courses and we were all amazed by the love and passion she puts into the food she cares so much for. True Thai is an extension of that love and we are looking forward to trying all the recipes in due course. You will not be disappointed by this opportunity to recreate simple family style Thai comfort food in the privacy of your home. Good luck and enjoy!

The recipes I've tried here was not good. A disappointment.

Excellent cookbook. I have several Thai cookbooks that I use and this is one of the best. Each of the recipes I have tried has turned out quite good. Very pleased with my purchase.

This is simply a great book. The way the chapters are put together, the help with terms and pantry items one needs is really a plus. The whole work is informative and beautiful.

I'm a huge fan of Thai food but have never attempted to create any dishes in my own kitchen, aside from Pad Thai, I've always just left that to the experts of my favorite local Thai food restaurants. Chef Thaimee visited Houston earlier this year and hosted a pop up dinner where I was blown away by her gracious presence and love of serving up family style meals, creating a space for people who'd never met to dive into her Thai cuisine and great conversation. Her cookbook is consistent with what I experienced at the pop up dinner, Hong is passionate about people and about teaching. In the cookbook, she offers up her very personal family recipes, full of some spices and ingredrients I'd never heard of, and brings them to life through photos of the people and places throughout Thailand she holds so dear. This cookbook is a bridge of sorts, connecting me to a beautiful culture and eliminating the guess work and fear from creating these dishes for my own family. My personal favorites are the Som Tum (green papaya salad), the Ab Pla (grilled fish in banana leaves) and the Moo Satay! And I made them all on my own! Thank you Chef Hong for this beautiful guide to bringing such delicious dishes to my family's table!

Authentic Thai

This is a BEAUTIFUL cookbook! The images are breathtaking and I feel like I really get to know Chef Hong through the stories she weaves throughout the book. The food is wonderful too. Highly recommended.
