This book by the naturalistic Scot Shaman Andrew Steed is an interesting exploration of the family Corvidae - the ravens and crows. We learn myths and symbolism of these creatures, the relationship with the Morrighan, how to engage with them and understanding the world through the language of birds.Scientific curiosity such as Dr. Marzluff's experiments with crows' ability to relate to masks is used to open our perception to the birds, and further built on through folktales such as the legend of Bran, creation stories featuring Raven and the author's personal experiences, notably his visit to the Festival of the Crow in Varkala, Kerala, India. He performs an exegesis of these stories by relating them to our contemporary lives, no small feat, and one that makes these tales more relevant than ever.One gets a sense that ravens and crows are, as it were, spirits of place, allowing us to connect with the land, the darker side of our selves and death.

-As a healthcare worker for over 30 years I can tell you I did not understand the impact that death played in me. For years I watched and attended to people that passed. Elderly and chronic illness in the nursing home and assisted living when I began my career. Children and babies in Pediatrics. Then on to cardiac patients in the Cardiac Cath lab where it was routine early on to rush and attend a death in literally minutes and numbly rush on to the next patient of maybe 20+ in that day. Even down to the deaths of my own parents; I was not processing it, until I started to study with Andrew Steed. With Andrews teaching and amazing guidance I am finally processing. I think this book should be in the hands of every healthcare worker as they start down the path. It gives you a tool in the profession to be more compassionate, loving and accepting. Dont we need more of that right now?

I ABSOULTLY was captivated with this book from page one till the very end. The story telling from Andrew Steed is just so spirit filled , playful, funny and his words took me right there in the story. The story that I felt so drwan to was Morrighans cave entering into Mother Gaia down deep into the earth and coming back out into the light. The other story about going to the crow festival in India was AMAZING!! I traveled to India once I thought was going to be a pilgrimage but turned out to be a retail fest and was so disappointed, I hope one day to return with Andrew and REALLY see India and all her Magic and maybe here the call of the crows there. All The stories and there magical meanings spoke to my heart. Thank you for this Gem I now possess in my heart.

Need to know how to do a power calculation for a reasonably common statistical analysis and don't know what software can do it? Get this book!The author begins by briefly talking about sampling strategies and effect sizes and other important issues in determining how many subjects you need for a study. Then he provides the general information on power and goes briefly into issues for power in various common statistical methods including: differences in means and proportions, odds ratios, chi-square tests, ANOVA-ANCOVA-MANOVA (with or without repeated measures), correlation, ordinary least squares regression, logistic regression, Cox regression and many more esoteric techniques (but be warned that Bayesian methods for sample size in clinical trials are not covered). This material is presented with very little algebra so if you want to study the math look elsewhere.Instead of the math, the author provides *excellent* references to how to do the analyses including free tools on the web, free tools provided by independents and the major software companies, shareware, as well as the expensive heavy hitter packages (SPSS, SAS, S-Plus, nQuery, etc.).There are worked examples with screen shots of the software, great notes and a awesome references. This books is superb for people who need something more than the back of an envelop guess and lays out the tools that a practicing statistician will frequently need.

Nice beginner text. Worked examples are especially helpful. The extensive use of free software allows sample size learning with minimal investment.

The books is very badly written and incoherent. It refers to equation numbers but the equations are not numbered. It seems that some parts of the sections are incomplete. Keeps referring to other books instead of briefly explaining the the subject. Overall I did not find the book a useful guide for determining sample size, as it claims to be.

Unpacking that statement, this book provides sound guidance to anyone contemplating being an expert witness, and should also very helpful to people who already have some experience in being expert witnesses. Not worth the money

This book was a good primer on expert witness work. It will be particularly useful to those in the medical field.

Straight forward. A good companion to SEAK material

Mr. Field has provided an incredible resource to those who may interact with the law as an expert, whether called on the plaintiff or defense side. In a straight forward, readable manner, Mr. Field calls upon 40 years of legal experience to detail the process of providing expert review, deposition and testimony. He also offers useful advice, such as suggesting that experts stay on what he calls "expert island", i.e. don't allow yourself to answer questions about which you know nothing! He uses simple but engaging example cases to explain his points. Most importantly, Mr. Field emphasizes the need for the expert to maintain their integrity and to offer their opinion as they see it. This, he writes, will lead to a high level of credibility and, most likely, more business for the expert.

The Expert Expert is a great resource for anyone preparing for trial. I'm a law school graduate preparing for the CA bar exam and read it for fun to refresh my understanding of expert witnesses. The book was easy to read and clearly laid out. The book helps expert witnesses be great. However, reading it through the lens of an upcoming attorney I believe it can help me in my practice too. I plan to keep it in my library as a resource when selecting an expert witness. I even gave The Expert Expert as a gift to an insurance expert.
